In 1848–49 three Iowa men named Alfred Sully founded a small post at Jamestown on both sides ofthe Missouri River north of Pierre; they called it "Sully's Station." From this point forward until 1862 when federal troops destroyed it during operations against fierce Sioux resistance east ofthe Arkansas River at Council Bluffs they served as important shipping points betweenPierre (then Anadarko) on the southwest sideofthe Missouri River and Rock Springs on tributary MissouriRiver below Council Bluffs ferry landing.
