In 1785, the first Jamestown Settlement was founded in North Dakota by Scottish settlers. The settlement was located on the present day site of Fargo, N.D. In 1881, the town of Fargo was named in honor of General James K. Polk and his wife Emma (1807-1887). On December 20, 1886, President Grover Cleveland granted a liquor license to the firm of Waddell & Company for use in Fargo. This event is often cited as the beginning of Fargo's drinking culture. In 1907, Fargo became the capital of North Dakota and it has since been its largest city with an estimated population of over 150,000 residents today.

In 1881, a group of men from Jamestown set out to establish a new settlement in what is now North Dakota. They were inspired by the example of Plymouth Rock, which had been founded more than two hundred years earlier and was the first successful white settlement in what is now America. The men began construction on their farmstead and storehouse and soon realized that they needed a better place to live. They looked around for some suitable land and found it in what is now Fargo County. The Menasha Creek watershed lay just east of their farmstead, so they decided to name the new community after one of their countrymen, John Menasha. As time went on, other settlers arrived and eventually there were more than 100 people living in Jamestown when it was chosen as the site for North Dakota's first capital.
Jamestown was founded in 1876 by the Virginia Company of London as a fur trading post on the Missouri River. The company lost interest in the area after a few years, and it was not until 1881 that another company, the North Dakota Territory Company, arrived to establish a trading post at Jamestown. This company operated for about a decade before being replaced by the Homestead Land Grant Commission. In 1904, the commission transferred ownership of Jamestown to the United States government and it became part of what is now North Dakota. The first settlers at Jamestown were mostly men from eastern England who had come overland along the Missouri River. Over time, however, women also began to arrive and many families built homes around their Trading Post. The town gradually grew and by 1907 there were over 100 residents living here full-time. By 1915, however, only 30 people lived here permanently due to poor economic conditions in North Dakota andrising costs associated with railroad construction across the state. By 1920 only 10 people remained at Jamestown while most of its residents moved away or died during World War I or World War II. However, despite these challenges, life at JamestOWN continued generally unchanged for several decades until finally becoming insolvent in 1951 due to falling oil prices and lack of other revenue streams. It soon became defunct again as well after being abandoned by its last remaining residents in 1978; today it is an empty lot located within sight of downtown Fargo. Despite this long history of decline and abandonment, however, Jamestown still retains some vestiges of its former self including its unique architecture which can be seen from various parts of town both during day-time and night-time alike; as well as its rich history which can be explored through its numerous museums and archives housed throughout downtown Fargo.

The Jamestown colony was founded in 1718 by the Englishman William III and his wife, Queen Anne. The settlement was named for John Smith, an early settler who served as a captain in the British military during the war of 1739-1745. The first phase of development at Jamestown was agricultural. However, by 1753, when the first permanent buildings were erected there, Jamestown had become a thriving trading post with connections to Canada and Europe. By 1800, it had reached its peak as a commercial center with ferry services to Canada and Europe. However, economic troubles began to develop around 1800 and within a few yearsJamestown had fallen into disrepair. In 1806, after more than two centuries of English rule in North Dakota Territory, Indian traders regained control over the region and destroyed much of the infrastructure that had been built at Jamestown. The town ceased operations completely by 1810. Today only pieces of some of the original buildings remain from what was once one of North Dakota's most important communities- including The Masonic Temple which is located on Main Street across from The Depot restaurant near downtown Sioux Falls.
The first permanent European settlement in North Dakota was made by French fur traders in 1823. The British established a trading post at Fort Pierre in 1829 and the United States erected a military post at Jamestown in 1830. The area now known as North Dakota was part of Canada until 1867, when it became a U.S. state.
