Jamestown was founded in 1892 by Englishmen, primarily Sir John Smith and his wife Lady Jane Fenton. The site was located on the Missouri River, about 160 miles (260 km) north of Omaha, Nebraska. The town was named for James Lancaster, 3rd Earl of Derby, who had purchased the land in 1849. It became a trading post and wagon road junction before being abandoned in 1876 following the discovery of gold on the nearby Montana-New Mexico border. In 1912, Jamestown was renamed North Dakota's capital city after its incorporation as a state.
