Jamestown was founded in 1876 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a temporary wintering ground for the American Discovery Expedition. The town had been proposed by Captain Fenton of the Hudson's Bay Company, who thought that it would be a convenient place to store goods brought overland from Canada. At first, Jamestown only held about 100 people, but it soon became an important trading post on the Missouri River. In 1878, construction began on the original fortification of Jamestown. The fortifications were designed by Major General Samuel J. Van Horne and took two years to build. They consisted of a stockade around a square base with four bastions projecting outwards. Five cannons were installed within the fortifications, and they also built an ambulance service and a millrace to serve as water supplies for the garrison. The fortifications were not successful at repelling Native American attacks, but they did provide some protection forJamestown during its early years. In 1879, however, Fort Beresford was constructed north of Jamestown to provide more defence against Indian attacks. This fortification was much more successful at protecting Jamestown than its predecessor, and it remained in use until 1898 when it was replaced by Fort Bismarck. In 1861, there were only about 200 people living in what is now North Dakota; by 1870 there were over 10,000 people living in North Dakota alone because of the impact of goldmining operations in that state. Because of this growth, social tensions began to increase throughout North Dakota; these tensions eventually led to violence and political instability in that state%. One example of this social unrest is found at Jamestown; after several Indian raids into southern North Dakota during 1860-1861, local residents decided to build a stockade around their settlement in order to protect themselves from future attacks. However, this stockade didn't work very well and quickly became known as "the Bastion Block." This name stuck because many residents continued to build new bastions around their original village even though they no longer needed them (See: "Bastion Block Residents React To Plans To Remove Bastion Blocks"). This type of conflict between settlers and natives can be seen throughout much of western North Dakota during this time period; it remains oneofthe most enduring challenges facing northern communities today (). This type of conflict ultimately led to political instability in parts of northwestern North Dakota which led directlyto manifestations such as armed robberiesand internal civil strife ().
