The United States Army began its existence in 1775 as the Continental Army, and it still functions today as one of America's largest and most popular military services. The army has fought in every American War since 1812, and has played a significant role in both World Wars I and II. In 1907, the U.S. government purchased 3,000 acres (1 km2) of land at Jamestown to establish Fort Robinson barracks for soldiers stationed there during World War I. At that time, Jamestown was the only permanent military installation in North Dakota. Over time, other installations have been established at Aberdeen Proving Ground (1947-1948), Camp David (1978-1979), and Fort Bragg (1981-1983). Today, the army operates more than 1 million acres (4 km2) of land across six states in North America; it has also acquired thousands of pieces of equipment and technology over the years. The first American military forces were organized in the Dakota Territory in 1867. The Sioux and Cheyenne had been attacking settlers for years, and by 1871, the US government was formally asking for help against them. On December 17 of that year, General Alfred Sherman ordered his army to march into the territory. The Sioux and Cheyenne fought back fiercely, but soon enough, Sherman's troops had numerical superiority. They began systematic massacre of both groups, killing as many as they could before retreating. This event is often considered to be the beginning of World War I.

The Spartan military society was noted for their strict unit system, which required each soldier to bring his own food and equipment with him on Campaigns. This led to the development of the first modern Army gift: a mace or battle-axe as a symbol of strength and nobility. In Rome, it was not until towards the end of Republic when an Emperor began issuing orders directly to His Majesty’s Troops in order to receive specific items such as swords, shields, helmets or spears from their Commander-in-Chief. From this point onwards it became more common for commanders to award gifts instead of simply awarding Orders (as had been done before). It was during this period that pendants became popular as symbols denote rank within an army (e.g., Lieutenant colonel would wear a large purple pendant while Colonel wore smaller green ones). Armour also started becoming popular as Gifts at this time; examples include breastplates (which were often given as presents), greaves (to protect against cavalry charges), spurs (to act as horse archers) and lances (used only by footsoldiers). Although Gifts were still made throughout much of Empire into Late Antiquity they tended increasingly towards ceremonial objects such as coins or lamps which served both practical purposes AND built up individual prestige within armies. By 476 AD all Roman armies had adopted an imperial standard shaped like an elephant rampant holding two golden discs with three words inscribed on them – ‘Imperator Augustus – Nerva Restituta’ – which signified that any given commander held supreme command over all his troops nationwide without exception under his direct control. The town was abandoned in 1845 after a fatal flood destroyed most of the infrastructure. It re-emerged as a ghost town from 1925 to 1951 when it became part of Fargo. The town is now a museum that offers tours of its remains. In 1836, English colonists established Fort Snelling on the north bank of the Missouri River opposite present-day Jamestown. Named for James Robertson, an officer in the British Royal Navy who had accompanied General Andrew Jackson to survey the area, Fort Snelling served as an outpost along Indian country bordering Canada and South Dakota before being abandoned due to flooding in 1845. In 1925, Fargo renamed itself Jamestown and began offering Tours of its Historic District which included portions of both fortifications dating back to 1836. In 1951, Fargo annexed what remained of Fort Snelling and incorporated it into its city limits
The Jamestown Settlement was founded in 1876 by English colonists, including Captain John Smith, Jr. and his wife Pocahontas. The first permanent settler population arrived in 1877. The settlement grew rapidly, with many more people coming over the next few years. In 1889, the U.S. government purchased the land from the British for $7 million dollars ($253 million today). The United States built a military post on the site to serve as a strategic outpost against Canada and Mexico.
