The history of artisan coffee in Grand Forks goes back even further than that – Pabst Brewery began producing ground-up beans for retail sale in 1888. At that time, Pabst Brewery was one of the earliest breweries to sell cups of espresso separately from their beer products. Over time, Pabst Brewery evolved into a leading brewer of premium cold drinks such as iced tea and mochaLatte®. In 2001, Pabst Brewing Corporation divested itself of its brewing operations and sold off all its assets worldwide except for its namesake brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – which remains operational today as an iconic tourist destination specializing in craft beers and food pairings. Today, there are more than 20 independent artisanal coffee businesses operating throughout North Dakota alone – each bringing their own unique flavor profile and perspective to the table when it comes to espresso beverages. As an academic coffee researcher, I have long been interested in the artisanal coffee movement. The term "artisanal" is often used to describe coffees that are hand-roasted or made with specific ingredients and methods. There are many reasons why artisanal coffee can be more expensive than regular coffee. For one, the quality of the beans may be higher. There is a greater chance that these beans were roasted by a professional roaster who has experience with specific types of beans and how to best flavor them. Additionally, some artisanal brands may use unique blends or other flavors that might not be available from other brands. The benefits of purchasing artisanal coffee also include greater satisfaction because it typically involves more time and effort expended into sourcing and preparing the beans than buying regular coffee from a store. Additionally, there is often a sense of personal accomplishment when someone completes a project like hand roasting their own bean - something few people can do easily or at a lower cost.
There are a few different types of coffee that can be found in the area, but the two most popular types are Ethiopian and Arabica. The Arabsica beans are from Africa and have a more woodsy flavor than the Ethiopians.
