Grand Forks, North Dakota is a town located in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Grand Forks is part of the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. It lies on the border of Cass and Dakota counties. The first settlers in what would become Grand Forks were farmers who came to this area in 1881. The town was platted in 1903 by Elisha Kittrell and others as a market town for the Cass County Agricultural Society land east of Minneapolis which had been patented by President James K. Polk in 1849 as "Northwest Territory", after his tour of the region during the Mexican-American War. The original name for Grand Forks was Antietam (after Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel about an American soldier fighting Napoleon). In 1907, when it became known as Fargo-Moorhead, it was decided that Grand Forks should be placed within its borders rather than being split among two towns which were not really connected politically or economically. The name Fargo-Moorhead has stuck since then and is still used today by many people throughout the metro area outside of downtown Grand Forks proper where most commercial activity takes place. The central square in downtown is named for George Armstrong Custer who died here while trying to cross the Little Bighorn River north into Canada during their July 4th battle near present day Mount Rushmore National Monument (then called Montana Territory). After his death nearly 2 years earlier at age 22 from a bullet wound received near Fort Laramie west of Denver, Colorado; he had been leading a cavalry unit against Sioux Indians west of Yellowstone National Park at Custer's last stand before his surrender at Ghost Ranch on July 15th 1876; his funeral service took place on July 20th1876 at St John's Episcopal Church located just east of Central Market Square with more than 25 thousand attendees including Ulysses S Grant who attended as military governorof Minnesota until April 1st 1877; $5 gold pieces were offered for each horse drawn carriage that crossed from Omaha to Billings but only one man ever got them so they are now known as "Custer Medals". This national event led to widespread interest across America in Indian Wars and later wars fought between Native Americans and settlers such as those fought by General George Armstrong Custer himself
