The Fargo, North Dakota Army National Guard is responsible for the defense of the state. The unit has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom andOperation Enduring Freedom. From then until today, members of the Fargo garrison have participated in many different conflicts and deployments throughout our nation’s history. During World War I, the Fargo Garrison served as a training ground for new soldiers from all over America. In 1918, the garrison helped form 4th Infantry Division which fought in France and Belgium during World War I. After World War I ended, members of the Garrison worked to rebuild and expand their operations. In 1924, they were again called into service in response toacts like Dust Bowl and New Deal which were affecting America at that time. They served as an armory guard for federal buildings until 1949 when they took on their current role as a military reserve unit within the ND State Defense Forces Collective Services Commanding Officer’s Office & Headquarters Battery (C&HB) 5th Field Artillery Brigade located at Ft Berwick AFB NDSF). Since its inception as a militia unit within ND State Defense Forces Collective Services Commanding Officer’s Office & Headquarters Battery (C&HB) 5th Field Artillery Brigade stationed at Ft Berwick AFB NDSF),the Fargo Garrison has played an important role in both world wars; lending their fire power to support otherunits while also providing civilians with necessary supplies and protection while away from home during wartime events such as: Desert Storm – 1991-1994; Kosovo – 1999-2000; Afghanistan –2001-2002; Iraq – 2003-2004; Lebanon –2006-2007 etc… As part of ND State Defense Forces Collective Services Commanding Officer’s Office & Headquarters Battery (C&HB) 5th Field Artillery Brigade headquartered at Ft Berwick AFB NDSF),the Fargo Garrison has donated thousands upon thousands of dollars towards numerous military charities across America through auctions held throughout our state legislature since 1978 including: American Red Cross Blood Donor Program 1942-1949 ; United States Marines Marooned Men Memorial 1941 ; Department Of Veterans Affairs POW/MIA Healthcare Foundation 1944 ; Military Order Of Danbury 1945 Additionally, member donations are often used towards special events or functions such as Governors Ball or Blue Ribbon Dinner where proceeds go specifically towards disaster relief efforts or scholarships for local students
