In Dickinson, North Dakota there is a history of coffee that goes back to the early 1800s. The first coffeehouses in what is now Dickinson were established around 1853 and served a variety of items such as newspapers, tea, and coffee. In 1865, the city's first grocery store opened and sold goods such as flour, sugar, butter, eggs, milk, and bread. By 1914 the population of Dickinson had increased to over 10 thousand residents and by 1920 the population had reached 20 thousand. The first commercial production of coffee began in 1912 in Anadarko County by John Dillingham who bought land for this purpose. He constructed a small farmhouse known as the Dillingham Coffee House which served ground beans from local green beans. By 1916 Dillingham was producing up to twelve million cups of coffee each month and employed sixty people on his farm. By 1922 he had moved his business to Wichita Falls Texas where it remained until 1938 when it relocated again to Anadarko County. Thereafter it continued production until World War II when it ceased operations due to lack of resources. During World War II there were two main types of coffee produced in Dickinson; black and white beans. Black beans came from facilities near Wichita Falls while white beans were grown at an unknown location in nearby Hillsboro County. The use of artificial colorings was also utilized during World War II so that different shades could be produced depending on how well they were processed or stored ( See "CoffeeColors during World War II"). Today Dickinson's history is significant because it has been home to one of America's largest espresso cafes since its establishment in 1978-79 called Joe's Coffee Roasters which serves both drip-brewed beverages as well as lattes/foams/_espresso drinks with various toppings such as syrups or whipped cream/frosting etc.. Dickinson, North Dakota is a town in Dickinson County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fargo–Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Dickinson" comes from a pioneer settler named John Dickinson and his family's farmstead on the Dickinsons River. Dickinson was founded in 1881 by James A. Decker and other early pioneers as a small community on land that had been donated by General Alfred P. Smith to the town of Fargo. The first store opened in 1881, and soon there were several other businesses in town including a post office, bank, livery stable, schoolhouse and grain elevator. In 1902, the first railroad arrived in Dickinson with an express train from Fargo to Grand Forks; however, it only served as a freight line and never reached Dickinson proper. The town saw its first commercial development with construction of the Grand Forks-Hudson Valley Railroad (GFV) which connected Grand Forks with Hudson City and reopened in 1906 bringing increased traffic to the small community. By 1920 there were over 25 businesses located in Dickinson with over 1,000 residents; however during World War II all but two of those businesses closed due to wartime rationing affecting civilian industry across Europe while military production went roaring ahead at local plants such as Alcoa aluminum smelters and DuPont chemical plants near Fargo-Moorhead. With increased housing costs throughout America during this time period new residents started moving intotowns such as Fargo or Moorhead looking for cheaper prices coupled with an increase number of job opportunities available after war re-opened following hostilities abroad The economy slowly began to rebound following World War II until 1970 when oil production peaked leading to unemployment among local workers followed by rapid economic growth thanks to energy exploration off state lines beginning around that time which has led to numerous new jobs being created here since then especially within manufacturing industries now employing many locals once again despite low oil prices Nowadays though although still experiencing some growth along with increasing property values due largely to expanding energy production recently traditional heavy manufacturing activities have begun disappearing leaving instead light engineering/manufacturing activities accounting for most recent job growth In terms of demographics both male (%) and female (%) populations are almost evenly split between 49% male and 51% female making it one of few towns overall where gender distribution does not skew towards one sex more than the other
