Dickinson was founded by Minnie Dickinson and her husband Samuel Dickinson in 1881. The first post office was established in Dickinson on February 2, 1882. The name of the town comes from General George Washington's home state of Virginia and its namesake river: the Susquehanna River. A store and hotel were built in what is now downtown Dickinson in 1889. In 1898, Dickinson became a city when it annexed neighboring Moorhead. In 1916, the U.S military moved into Fort Richardson as part of World War I preparations; within two years most of the buildings had been destroyed by fire caused by ammunition storage ignited during wartime activities. Other buildings damaged or destroyed during this time include a school building (1916), a garage (1920), an insurance company building (1921), and church (1926). As coal mining faded as an industry after World War II, many businesses closed or moved out of town;; however one business that has continued to operate successfully since then is the Christensen Bakery which opened its doors in 1957

On 15 May 1945, she collided with the Japanese destroyer Hiryu off Okinawa and lost her aft magazine. The crew were able to save most of their ships' complement by using a YO-2D Catalina flying boat as an airbase for homing in on survivors by radio.

Dickinson was founded on November 2, 1873 by the merger of the towns of Dickinson and Cut Bank. It served as the provisional capital of North Dakota from 1876 to 1889 when Fargo became the temporary capital. The first post office in Dickinson opened on October 15, 1875.
When the first white people came to Dakota in 1876, they were shocked by the natural beauty of the land. They named their new land North Dakota after General George Armstrong Custer, who had died in a battle near Bismarck two years earlier. The area was then part of Minnesota and there was no way for them to get it back. So they just keep moving north until they finally got it all back in 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt gave it to them as a state.
