Dr. Sarah Krupnick is an assistant professor of history at Dickinson College and the author of Coffee, Trade and Culture in North Dakota: 1875-1975 (forthcoming). She has written extensively on coffee history in North Dakota, with a focus on the town of Dickinson and its role in the industry. Dickinson was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1875 as a logging camp. The town quickly became known for its delicious coffee, which was ground into small cups and then sold to local merchants. The industry boomed during the early 1800s thanks to advances in transportation and processing technology. By 1900, Dickinson had become one of the largest coffee towns in America. The town's success story ended somewhat abruptly after World War II when production stopped due to shortages of beans and other factors. Dickinson and his wife, Mary L. Dickinson. It is named after General James K. Polk who fought at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. It lies along the Missouri River at its confluence with the Little Missouri River, about northwest of Fargo. The community name was first given to it by settlers in 1892. As of the 2010 census, Dickinson had a population of 709. The town was named after Samuel Morse Dickinson because he helped provide financial support for its construction. In 1892, Morse Dickinson donated land to the town and laid out its streets and houses. The town had a post office from 1893 until 1907; it was renamed Dickinson in 1907. In 1925, the town library opened and became one of the first public libraries in North Dakota; it remains open today. The original school building burned down in 1896 but was rebuilt and used as a church until 1948. A new school building was built in 1951 and serves as the current primary school campus; it also has a gymnasium and a theater on site.

Dickinson was founded in 1887 by Dr. James Dickinson and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two railway lines and its proximity to the agencies where goods were unloaded and transported. The town's growth continued until it reached its current size in the 1920s. In 1907, Dickinson became a city.
