At first there were no plans for a large city within the boundaries of Dickinson but as more people moved into the area and began businesses or built homes, community support for a larger-scale development became clear. In 1916 Centerpoint Power Company bought all privately owned land east of US 29/South Dakota Highway 14 and south of Interstate 85 within present day downtown Dickinson for $1 million dollars which created an urban center with high-density housing developments covering most blocks between First National Bank Plaza on Main Street (now I-85) north to Seventh Avenue (now US 19) west and Interstate 85 south. Downtown has since become one of North Dakota's most vibrant business districts with over 100 small businesses clustered around major arterial streets including Main Street Today, there are over 7,000 residents living in downtown Dickinson as well as scattered suburbs located throughout downtown area such as Garden City northeast towards Sioux Falls while Rapid City to the northwest supports a sizable agricultural sector with many small ranchers grazing cattle on rolling hills near Lake Sakakawea
