Gourmet Coffee History in Dickinson, North Dakota began with the first coffeehouses in 1892. The first coffeehouse was called the Dutchman and it was located on 5th Street between Broadway and Main. The founder of the Dutchman was George Roebuck. The second coffeehouse was called the Daily News and it was located on 9th Street between Broadway and Main. The founder of the Daily News was John Dory. The third coffeehouse was called the Star-Bagel and it was located on 4th Street between Broadway and Main. The founder of the Star-Bagel was Solomon Schechter. The fourth coffeehouse was called the Coffee House (later renamed to Harry’s) and it was located on 6th Street between Broadway and Main. Harry’s owner, James Fenton, started serving gourmet coffee from his shop in 1916. Orville Bean (1885-1966) - An American soldier who fought in World War II and later became an advertising executive. Bean is credited with creating the term "the testator" and helped rename North Dakota after himself. Bessie Ziegler (1900-1981) - A businesswoman who cofounded both Jiffy Lube Company and Pepsi Cola Corporation. She is also recognized for her work on behalf of Native American reservations throughout North Dakota.
After the Sioux Wars of 1876-1877, Dickinson was the capital of North Dakota from 1878 until 1890. It then became the seat of government for eastern North Dakota. In 1924, it became the capital of South Dakota.
