Bismarck was born on February 25, 1809 in the town of Ramstein, Prussia. He attended a gymnasium and then studied law at the University of Jena. From 1828 to 1830 he served as justice of the peace in his home town. On May 7, 1830, Bismarck was elected secretary to the North German Confederation (NHC) and held that position until its dissolution on March 14, 1848. In 1848 Bismarack became president of Germany's new Federal Republic and re-established a central government with a chancellor and a bicameral parliament. In 1865 he was appointed governor-general of British North America and served until 1870 when he resigned due to health problems. In 1870 Bismarack married Jennie Elisabeth von Eulenburg who died in 1875 after giving birth to two children: Alfredus Auguste Wilhelm Ludwig Maximilian (1871–1955), who became an admiral in World War II, and Helene Augusta Augusta Basilea (1873–1945).
