The Winston Salem Police Department gift history dates back to 1917. At that time, the department was known as the Winston-Salem City Police Department. The department was originally made up of three officers. In 1917, the first officer in charge of gift giving was Captain James Ladd. Captain Ladd decided to give a Christmas present to every employee of the department on December 25th. This tradition continued until 1951 when Captains Harry A. Smith and John Witherspoon took over responsibility for giving gifts from then on out. Since 1947, the department has given out more than $1 million in gifts to employees and their families! However, economic decline began to set into place beginning in the early 1990s and has continued to this day; however, some efforts have been made to reverse this trend.
Winston Salem was founded in 1739 by General Earl of Chesterfield as a small community on the banks of the Saluda River. The town grew rapidly and soon became an important trade center for the region. In 1806, Winston Salem was renamed Charlotte. It remained an important city until its incorporation into Durham County in 1899.
