Wilson was a census-designated place in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first white man to live in what is now Wilson County was James Robertson in 1788. He and his family named their land "New Town" after George Washington's new capital of Washington D.C., because they were then living near that location. (The town changed its name again in 1892 to honor General James Kountze Wilson.) In the late 1800s, many farmers began moving into the area around Wilsonville and Loudoun Hill on the Tennessee River because of good soil and water availability there. In 1903, a post office called "Wilsonville" was established at the edge of what is now known as dogwood Township; this became an incorporated town in 1907 under the name "Wilson". In 1912, so many people moved into Wilsonville that it became one of only two townships in North Carolina without a school district; it has since been annexed by Charlotte. It has seen some growth recently with several businesses opening up and more people moving here from surrounding counties such as Buncombe and Mecklenburg Counties
