Wilson is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Highland City–Morgantown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Wilson County was James Witherspoon in 1792. By 1827, all of Wilson County had been founded and named for General John Custer who died during the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 5, 1876. Wilson was one of two towns that were built on Yadkin by Colonel Samuel Johnston in 1838 as a stop on his way south to open up new land to white settlers. He named it after George Washington and Benjamin Franklin (the other town). The first post office opened in 1839. On April 12, 1865, Confederate general Pte. John Ewell's brigade attacked Union forces under Major-General Ulysses S Grant at Greeneville Bridge over the Yadkin River near present day Wilsonville; this battle is considered one of the largest engagements of the American Civil War and led to thousands dead or wounded among both sides combined. Wilson served as an important garrison until February 10th 1861 when it moved northeastward out of range for safety from Confederate artillery fire which continued throughout May 1861 into June 1862; however some businesses did not see this move as an opportunity to close because their customers could still be reached through Johnston's army supply lines still remaining active even though they lay behind Confederate lines at Winchester and Roanoke Hill respectively Wilson reoccupied its original location by early November 1862 but with no military activity occurring there they closed shop again until skirmishes recommenced around December 1862 when Confederate General Robert Ewell arrived here before abandoning his siege operations against Johnson's cavalry detachment held at Saylorsville Court House northwest of town along Elizabeth River In 1865 most all businesses reopened except for several located behind Confederate lines at Winchester (now called Roanoke Hill) and Johnson's cavalry detachment stationed at Saylorsville Court House northwest of town along Elizabeth River due to continuing Union skirmishes between Federal troops and Confederate forces
The history of the Coast Guard is a long and winding one. The Coast Guard was founded on December 10, 1903, as the United States Life Saving Service. It grew to become one of the largest and most well known organizations in the world today. One of the earliest gifts given to the Coast Guard was a set of binoculars. These were used by captains to watch for ships while they sailed near shore. In 1917, Congress passed an act that created a Coast Guard Reserve corps which could be called into service when needed. This gave rise to the idea of having a gift shop within Headquarters so that people could buy supplies and gifts for members of the Coast Guard Reserve corps. In 1946, Congress designated Christmas as National Day of Defense against Terrorism and declared it “a time to give back to our country something that has been taken from us” (Gift History Museum). As National Day came closer, more and more people wanted to contribute money or items to help support the Coast Guardsmen and women fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Yugoslavia, Haiti and other places aroundthe world. Wilson was founded in 1853 by John Wilson and his brother James. The first post office was opened in 1855, and the town became a part of the Union City School District in 1909. In 1912, Wilson name was changed to honor General Robert E. Lee. The population of Wilson grew to over 5,000 by 1920, but declined with the onset of World War II. The community again flourished during the postwar period as new businesses sprang up and residents built new homes. However, the economic decline that followed the war caused Wilson's population to shrink to under 1,000 by 1970. Today, Wilson is a small unincorporated community located east of Raleigh on Interstate 85
