The Wilmington Navy Yard was founded in 1814 as the first naval base on the Naval Coast of North Carolina. The yard served as a military and civilian center for defense of the coast until it closed in December 1943. The navyyard reopened in 1945 and functioned until its closure in 1991. The yards were home to a variety of military vessels, including submarines and attack boats, as well as commercial vessels. The navyyards also hosted many naval exhibitions and demonstrations, most notably during World War II when they exhibited U.S. Navy warships from around the world. In recent years, parts of the yards have been used for various purposes such as housing apartments and office buildings. The Wilmington Navy Yard is one of America’s oldest naval facilities and has been a critical part of both American maritime history and economic development along the Atlantic seaboard since its inception in 1814. Over time, Wilmington’s role at sea increased while its impact on shore life decreased; by 1941, however, Wilmington had regained some prominence within North Carolina’s economy due to its proximity to Raleigh-Durham Airport and its ties to the United States Marine Corps (USMC). The navyyard played an important role in World War II when it hosted U.S Navy warships from all over the world; during that time, it also became known as one of America’s “second cities” because so many people lived near where shipbuilding took place. After World War II ended, however, Wilmington declined again while Raleigh gained more importance within North Carolina’s economy; by 1990, Wilmington had entirely disappeared fromNC's radar screen due to lack of any major new projects or investments by state or local government officials interested in keeping it alive. Despite this lackadaisical attitude towards Philadelphia-based Naval Sea Systems Command (NSC) which operated much larger yards adjacent to NC's coastal townsite - NSC proposed redeveloping/renaming two existing structures at NW side Flavelle Drive & John F Kennedy Blvd., now called Naval Surface Warfare Center(NSWC), into NASWC 'Wilmington' Yard Complexes with intention to attract foreign navies operating outstation here for West Coast Fleet operations& latterly USA Today Plaza next door thereto – these plans met stiff opposition both locally& nationally led by Mayor Jock O'Connell who saw opportunity instead for revitalization project he long wanted see happen here (& opposed redevelopment plans even before they were announced) In late1991 after much failed lobbying attempt by then Governor James Hunt$DNavy Yard reopens only temporarily after being mothballed due largely to cost overruns associated with Hurricane Hugo $NDevelopment culminates with creation of National Defense University adjoiningNW side Flavelle Dr & JFK Blvd w/ intent @Naval Surface Warfare CenterbecomingNASWC 'Wilmington' Yard complex closed 12Dec1993 effective immediately following hurricane damage

The USS Constitution was a United States Navy ship that served in the War of 1812. She was the first U.S. warship to be built at the Wilmington Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, which later became known as North Carolina Tool anddie company. The Constitution was launched on October 26, 1813, and served throughout the war as part of Admiral David Dixon Porter's Commodore's Fleet. The Constitution was decommissioned in 1846, but she still stands as a museum ship in Wilmington today.
Wilmington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Research Triangle region between Raleigh and Chapel Hill. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 as of 2010.[1] Wilmington is home to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Duke University's School of Medicine. It also has a large concentration of high-technology companies, including IBM, Dell Technologies, NCR Corporation and Siemens AG. In recent years Wilmington has become an important tourist destination for visitors to the Triangle region. The area that became Wilmington was first inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Piscataqua people who lived along the coast from present-day Portsmouth to Cape Fear County before migrating inland towards what is now Durham and Wake counties in southeastern North Carolina about 4000 BC[2]. Theritish settlers began arriving in earnest around 1535 when Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León discovered a salt water harbor on the Catawba River near modern day Wilmington and named it La Isla de Santiago (Island of Saint John). This led to increased English settlement because it allowed goods brought overland by land route from New England through what is now Virginia to reach Spain without having to pass throughland.[3][4] The Portuguese established their base at Fortalezas on Canastota Point opposite what is now downtown Wilmington in 1559 during their War for America against Spain,[5] but abandoned it after only two months when they realized that they could not take Onslow Island which lay just east of where they had built their fortifications. American forces burned Fortalezas during the Battle of Grandy Island in 1776 while British General John Burgoyne besieged San Fernando de Noroña on behalf of Spain – this action helped lead to independence for both England and Portugal from Spanish rule[6]. After independence was gained, citizens voted unanimously (by secret ballot) to name their new city “Wilmington” after Samuel Willett, one of several investors who contributed $100 toward its establishment[7]. The first recorded reference to Wilmington comes from Nicholas Negerski who noted in his diary on October 25th 1695 that he saw two canoes coming downriver “from Delaware” but he did not know where this came from since there were no such things as rivers then[8]. By 1775 there were 4 settlements: Quakersville (now part of Raleigh), Newark Plantation (now part of Cary), Georgetown Plantation (now part of Durham) and Elizabeth City [9], all located along the Tryon River southward from what is today downtown Wilmington. At this time much trade took place alongthe river due mostlyto its width which enabled boats upriver many times per day(and still does). Trade continued until 1812 when navigation restrictions were put into effect following Francis Marion's victory at Hanging Rock Creek Bridge overmoderately deep Creek Valley Streams west of present day Downtown Wilmington[10][11][12]). James Buchanan--future president—served as mayor during this period [13][14]. In 1819 Governor James Asher granted permission for brickmaking beginning within 200 feet (.61 metres)of public buildings inside town limits; four years later David Dixon opened the FIRST brickyard northofthe Tryon River in town limits;Continuing production until 1865 when brickyards closed due lack cf competition from machine technology [15],[16]; Brick pavement began being made here in 1877 [17]; First electric lights were placed here November 3rd1879 [18];Robert E Lee visited town May 9TH 1880 while visiting UNCW; George Washington Carver arrived August 5TH 1881 with his familyuma caravanandThis event initiated heavy industry development here including papermaking nanotechnology trucking)[19]; Today Masterpiece Cement manufactures HERE concrete products

His policies helped create jobs for all citizens regardless of social class or lack thereof-a major cornerstone of his presidency! In addition to his many accomplishments as president (and mayor), Washington also left behind many examples that continue to be followed today such as The George Washington University where he taught until his death on July 24th,, 2017
