The Wilmington Air Force Base is home to the 177th Tactical Fighter Wing (177 TFW), which was activated on July 1, 1997. The wing is a subordinate unit of the 9th Airlift Wing located at Ramstein AFB, Germany. The wing traces its lineage back to World War I when it was established as the 4th Aero Squadron at Camp Butler in Kentucky. Sinceactivation, the Wing has conducted several deployments: Operation Neptune's Spear – deployed to Kuwait in 2002; Operation Enduring Freedom – deploying teams of F-16s and E-3A Sentries to Afghanistan from February 2001 until May 2003; and Operation Iraqi Freedom – deploying A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft and C-130J Hercules transports in support of Operation Southern Watch from March 2003 until May 2004. One squadron, the 414th Test & Evaluation Squadron (414 TES), provides combat training for Air National Guard pilots flying fictitious NATO missions in support of United States Special Operations Command operations. In addition, two squadrons -the 388th Tactical Fighter Squadron (388 TFS) and 407th Tactical Fighter Squadron (407 TFS) - provide airlift capacity for homeland security missions such as disaster relief or counterdrug trafficking operations. In 2006, WAFB donated an extra $5 million towards installation of an electronic warfare mission center that would be used by both the 137st AWACS Wing and 179 thTactical Fighter Wing along with other units stationed at WDBAW if needed during hostilities with Iraq or North Korea On October 24, 2007 Wilmington AFB hosted a flyover by US fighter jets from 50 countries including JapanDFS

Wilmington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and the county seat of New Hanover County. Wilmington was founded in 1788 as an Intendant Town on Cape Fear River by trustees who included Daniel Boone and James Mitchell. The town grew quickly due to its location on the mouth of the river, its easy access to transportation, and its strategic position as a trade center for both rural areas to the north and coastal towns to the south. In 1825, Wilmington became an official port city under statehood with passage of a state constitution granting it full political rights. In 1860, following Confederate victory over Union forces during the American Civil War, Wilmington lost most of its autonomy but prospered as a slaveholding community until after Reconstruction when African Americans were granted voting rights statewide. The modern-day city was founded in 1892 when two railroads merged to create one: The Wilmington & Western Railroad (W&W) which had been created from parts of several other companies terminus around that time including The Wilmington Railroad & Coal Company (WR&C), also formed in 1892; and Atlantic Coast Line Railway (ACL) which had been created from what was then part of Charlotte & Henderson Railroad (C&H). After W&W's merger into ACL, many businesses within downtown gradually relocated away from what is now known as "The cultural district" towards new development eastward along Market Street between Broadwalk Avenue and Interstate 95/U.S Route 421/ NC 64 corridor
