Navy Deployed Gift History Weddington, North Carolina began with the donation of a fishing net on December 1, 1916. The gift was in memory of Rear Admiral John W. Cook who died in World War I and is buried at Fort Meade National Cemetery. The first Navy deployed gift was a drum from Seattle as a memorial to sailors who lost their lives during World War I. On December 15, 1917, the Naval Institute presented Commander Ernest Halsey with a model U-boat hull as a token of appreciation for his past naval service. The USS Constitution Museum in Philadelphia contributed an American flagstaff and thirteen white stars to the collection on February 2, 1919. From 1921 until 1951 the Naval Academy Chapel donated four pieces of ship’s furniture- two chairs and two tables-one for each year of its existence. A plaque recognizing these donations hangs in the chapel’s entrance today. On November 11, 1951, Rear Admiral Harry S. Truman was given a bouquet of flowers by his wife Eleanor Roosevelt at Joint Base Andrews Air Force Station Maryland during her visit to DSTL(AW) Weddington (now NAS Jacksonville). This event marked the first time that gifts were sent through regular mail from Washington DC to Norfolk VA whence they were delivered to military installations around America by truck or train where they were accepted and placed into individual mailed boxes outside the installation gates.. The USS Constitution (CV-1) was a United States Navy ship that served in World War II. The Constitution was deployed to the Atlantic Ocean in 1941 and 1942, serving as flagship of the First Naval District. In 1944, she became flagship of the Third Naval District. Her final deployment took her to Mediterranean Sea in 1945.
Weddington is a small town located in Onslow County, North Carolina. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. Weddington is home to the Weddington Air Force Base which is the largest airfield in Onslow County and one of the largest military installations in eastern North Carolina. In addition to its role as an air forcebase, Weddington also has been used for other purposes including livestock farming, manufacturing, and service industries. Weddington was founded on July 4th, 1775 by colonists from Augusta County, Georgia. The original settlers were Methodists who named their settlement "Weddingdon." The first post office was established in 1811 and was called "Weddingston." The name of the town changed to Weddington on October 20th, 1907 when it became part of Onslow County. The first store opened in Weddingdon in 1811 and it was called "Mercer's Store". It closed around 1865 because of competition from other stores opening up in the area. A new store opened up in 1870 called "Frazier's Shop" which lasted until 1916 when it closed due to economic reasons. In 1924 a new store named "Peaceful Valley Market" opened up and it continued to be open until 1978 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1951 a water tower was built along with a couple of houses around it but no businesses moved into them because they didn't have any space or money to build anything else! A few years later someone started building housing near the water tower so that people could live close enough to get their water supply without havingto leave their house for hours! That person became known as the "Mayor" and he ran things till he passed away about 5 years ago! The wedddingtons are descendants of those original settlers from Augusta County who came overland through South Carolina on horseback during that year’s war with Native Americans known as “The Catawba War” (1775-1776). After spending several months traveling through various parts of South Carolina they arrived at what is now Onslow County on July 4th 1775 under leadership of Captain James Fenton – brother-in-law (and future Governor)of Ninety Six [Georgia]. They named their settlement after General George Washington’s plantation ‘Wedgwood’ just outside Philadelphia where he had been living duringthe American Revolution while his father awaited his formal summons back there for service (he did not actually serve). Colonel John Atwater bought land next door at some point during this time so that we can establish paternity for our Revolutionary ancestor Christopher Atwater born about 1700 & died1802 (<=>Onslow Counties Birth Records </A>). And so Montero Atwater 2nd generation continues thru my wife Debora Jeanette (Atwater) Hargrave 3rd generation thru her husband Michael Edward Hargrave 4th generation thru him [Michael Hargrave]…Adelaide Elizabeth Brown 6th generation thru her daughter Kimberly Ann Brown 7th generation thru her son David John Brown 8th Generation….So we go back (<=>to many ancestors]), way back even further than you could possibly imagine!" -From memory by Dr.: Allen Smedley

Here are six examples from across the years: 1) The USS Constitution (1845-46) was donated by Governor John Quincy Adams of Massachusetts in 1846 as a thank you for his help during the Mexican War. The ship had been lost at sea while on its way back from war against Mexico. 2) The USS Constitution was delivered in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt as a gift to Japan during their first Friendship Treaty negotiation process. 3) In 1931, HMS Resolution (1910-11), one of Britain's first cruisers, was donated by Admiral Arthur Cadogan along with four other warships as part of an effort to improve British relations with China after their collapse during World War I. 4) In 1946, Romania received a shipment of motorcycles from British motor manufacturer J W Millington Ltd in commemoration of their joining forces against Nazi Germany after World War II. 5) In 1951, Canada received a shipmentof farm animals from Australia in recognition of their Commonwealth relationship at that time. 6) On July 1st, 1954, United States Naval Officer Commanding at Singapore Harbor delivered 22 gasoline tanks and two steel drums filled with food supply goods destined for Singapore airfields following Operation Templer which saw Singapore liberation from Japanese rule

Weddington is a town in Iredell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,413 at the 2010 census. Weddington is located on the border of Yadkin and Randolph counties. The first settler in what became Weddington was James Whitehurst. He hired a local hunter to kill a bear that had been terrorizing his farmstead for weeks. In 1812, another settler, John Bennet, arrived in what became Weddington from Asheboro with his family. Bennet built him and his wife's home on the site of today's courthouse square. The Bennets were among the first white people to live in what would become Weddington. In 1827, John Hogg patented the land around present-day Weddington which he used as pasture for his horses and cattle. Hogg also started a small cotton gin near where he lived for years until it burned down in 1876. From this point forward,Weddington developed as an agricultural community with nearby farms providing produce for local markets throughout much of its history. Weddington lost its status as an agricultural center during World War II when most production within Iredell County took place outside of town due to air raids and other military-related constraints on agriculture production across much of southern North Carolina during that time period
On Weddington, North Carolina, the first settlers arrived in 1755. The town was named for Captain John Weddington of the British Navy. The early residents were farmers and fishermen. They built a small post office and store in 1809. In 1814, they voted to incorporation as a city.
