The Guards gradually became an active part of the American Revolution, and were renamed the Continental Army in 1795. The Militia Act of 1802 created a National Guard force that could be called into service for three months without pay. The National Guard was also authorized to raise money by issuing certificates of indebtedness. In 1861, when Confederate States of America was formed, the National Guard was re-designated as the Confederate Army and began to wear uniforms similar to those used by Union troops. After the war, most members of the National Guard were discharged or resigned, but some remained on active duty until 1925.
Weddington is a small town in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a bedroom community and has a small school district. The name "Weddington" comes from an early settler named Willard who built a cabin there in 1853. The first post office in Weddington was established in 1876 and was called Greenville until it changed its name to Weddington in 1907. Weddington has two schools: Wedlington Elementary School which serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and Weddington Middle School which offers ninth through twelfth grades. There are also three churches in Weddington: First Baptist Church, Christ Church of God In Christ, and Pilgrim's Rest PresbyterianChurch. The town was originally laid out as a rural village on the edge of what is now Durham County by Samuel Whitehead in 1814 when he bought land from the Cherokees for $2,000 cash. Whitehead named his new settlement after his wife's parents, William and Mary Whitehead. He built a log cabin near present day downtown Weddinton on Broad Street and began farming the area around it. By 1830 white settlers had started arriving to search for land along the Yadkin River that would become Durham County; they erected their homes on high ridges overlooking the river below or along its banks where later developed streets were laid out (leading away from some residences). In 1861 John Aiken purchased 1/3 interest in Whitehead's original tract of land east of present day downtown Weddinton for $5 per acre plus interest; this tract formed what became known as Aiken Hill.. In 1865 Watauga County was created from portions of Burke and Wake Counties when Johnston made an official declaration that all Cherokee Indian lands within these boundaries should be unified into one county under his jurisdiction.. On October 12th 1865 Aiken sold 3/4 acre located at High Point Road & Old Walnut Street to James Broughton for $10 per acre with annual payments due until 1800; this tract became known as Broughton Hill.. In 1870 Watauga County added 2 more parcels to form parts of today’s Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area.. On January 1st 1881 Wm Fenton acquired title to section 5 northeast corner Broad St., thenceforth commonly called Fenton’s Addition.. This addition provided grid square location for both Raleigh &Durham MSA.. On December 16th 1886 James Hargrave donated 4 acres northwest corner Main Street & New Bern Road to wedlock philanthropist Mrs Eliza Tatum Smithers Symington for use as open space .. Mrs Symington dedicated this property to serve as her home & she occupied it until her death on November 21st 1922 .. Mrs Smithers left behind over 100 years worth of memories about her time spent here including hosting numerous social events such as dances given at her home while attending local colleges like Duke University (& Moreno Chapel), numerous concerts at various locations throughout Rutherford County (including Meadowvale Auditorium), baptisms & marriages here, Ladies Home Journal articles about life hereabouts published during that time period etc… Today many people visit “Mrs Symington” Park located adjacent to Fenton's Addition where they can enjoy a varietyof activities such as baseball games, soccer matches between teams from surrounding townships (eastern Cary Hills playing off nearby Knightdale High School Fields), picnics,, weekly amateur golf tournaments etc…. With all these activities taking place every week within just blocks radius you would think that Friars Ave could do without any commercial development BUT unfortunately not so…..Avenue Square does have some recent businesses like CVS Pharmacy but overall it feels much more relaxed than other large city cores I've been involved with over the past few years

Weddington, North Carolina is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Weddington was founded in 1819 by General Jonathan Weddleton and his wife Elizabeth. It served as a depot on the Raleigh and Greenville Railroad. In 1865, Weddington became the seat of government for Carteret County when it was created from parts of Prekes Township and Rutherford County. In 1922, Weddington incorporated as a village. Weddington's history begins with General Jonathan Weddleton who settled there in 1819 after being discharged from service in India. He married Elizabeth Knight and their first child was born in 1822. The family soon moved to what is now part of carteret county where they started a cotton plantation called "The Plains". They also built a platte (a type of house) which still stands today on Church Street near the present day Post Office building. This house may have been the first one built inCarteret County! The family continued to farm until 1830 when they sold their land to Jno Catesworth who built the original courthouse here today! After purchasing more land nearby, the Catesworths continued farming until 1840 when they sold their last piece of land here to James Sutherfield who used it for pasture! By this time, most of what is now CarteretCounty had been developed as plantations! In 1865, general John Brierly arrived in town and took office as sheriff. He did much to promote development aroundWeddinton with his construction projects such as building an early schoolhouse and jail which are still standing today! A few years later he died suddenly leaving behind many children including future governor Landon Carter!!! In 1922 wedlington incorporation occurred making it one of those pioneering towns that sprang up overnight!!! Many people remember late mayor/first lady Mildred Bednarz who ledthe community through some tough times during her tenure including budget cuts!! MrsBednarz remains an iconic figure here locally due to her work1in developingthe local economy!! After she passed away young widow Stacey Weisner took overand ledwedlington through another periodof growth culminating with its current status quo!! Today there are many businesses operatingin town including several hospitals and several large residential areas!!!
