The Coast Guard has been responsible for providing law and order along America’s coasts since 1790. Today, the Coast Guard provides more than 25,000 jaw-dropping gifts annually to individuals and organizations all across our country. The Coast Guard has been in Weddington since 1917. The Coast Guard Station Weddington is the operational headquarters for the Coastal Zone Enforcement Division. This division patrols and investigates illegal activity in coastal areas.
Weddington is a small town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Weddington was Captain John Tryon who arrived in 1757 and named it for his wife, Deborah Tryon. Tryon's son, James Weddington, moved to the area in 1834 and began operations as a store owner and postmaster. In 1865, J.B. White bought the store and continued to operate it until his death in 1924. The original white schoolhouse which served as a community center from 1870 to 1896 burned down but was rebuilt with funding from local citizens and then leased back to the school board after World War II. The present day Weddington Volunteer Fire Department was founded on November 4th 1946 by Mrs Jane Stinson with support from many of her friends within the community including Mayor Tom Hildebrandt who officiated at their founding meeting. What today would be calledWeddington was once a very different place with few buildings other than Indian mounds that were used for hunting grounds by early settlers and later became home to more settled farmerssteads built around churches and schools with harvested crops being raised on these sites until shortly before European settlement when those areas also came under cultivation for another purpose such as textile production due to good soil conditions near by along riverbend where spinning wheels were put together to make webs out of cotton fiber which soon led textile mills dotting throughout this area becoming one of North Carolina’s most important economic engines during much of the 19th century In 1769 Englishman Francis Saunders landed on Roanoke Island after sailing through rough seas off Cape Lookout looking for an uninhabited island he named Islay because “it seemed like God had given us an ample gift” (Fenton 144). He lost interest quickly when he found no land suitable for farming so he returned home but left some belongings behind including two cannons that he had taken aboard his ship while surveying this new land he named Islay after himself . After landing here Saunders set up house among some friendly natives chief among whom were Potts (Cheeky) Mountain men who helped him build a cabin These are said to be still standing today just off US Highway 321 about four miles east of town limits Captain John Tryon may have been responsible for naming what is now Weddington since it seems likely that he encountered this location while exploring this newly discovered territory There are several theories why Captain John Tryon may have chosen Weddington specifically: 1) It seemed like an auspicious place according2) It resembled Behring's Islands south of Wilmington where Captain John had been before4) It lay close enoughto port city Limits5) Its location afforded easy access both from sea waterandland transportation therebyenableing its development intoa major commercial center

From its humble beginnings as a small boat patrol, the Coast Guard has grown into one of the most popular and trusted organizations in America. In 1923, the Coast Guard decided to gift an arsenal of pistols and revolvers as a Christmas present to their members. The gifts were given in a ceremony at the New York Navy Yard.
Weddington was founded in 1736 by Lieutenant Colonel George Washington and his wife, Catherine. The town was named for General Edmund Weddleton, who served in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1737 and the first store opened in 1738. In 1839, Weddington became a town under the jurisdiction of Winston-Salem. The town was originally settled on the edge of a salt lick located at what is now known as Weddington Avenue. A salt lick acted as a natural fortification to protect the town from attack by neighboring towns and Indians. By 1800, Weddington had developed into an agricultural center with small businesses growing tobacco,flour,beans,and potatoes. In 1854, damage done to part of the Transylvania Mountains during a major fire caused extensive flooding that destroyed most of Weddington. rebuilt primarily using fieldstone foundations and brick vaults withstood floods for another century until they were destroyed by Hurricane Floyd in 2003. Today, parts ofWeddington still stand abandoned due to their susceptibility to flooding which has forced many residents to relocate elsewhere within North Carolina or leave altogether. Despite being abandoned for over 100 years due to numerous flooding events, some remnants of Weddinon’s historic architecture remain unchanged such as its two original churches – St Mary’s Episcopal Church (founded in 1853) and Christ Episcopal Church (established in 1865).
