In 1902, Harry Weldon opened his own business, J.B. Weldon’s Coffee Shop, which became one of the biggest and most successful roasters in the area. It was here that Harry met his wife Bella and began roasting coffee for local customers. From their home on Third Street, they would watch the beans being roasted and select those that they wished to purchase. Over time, they became well-known within the community for their delicious coffee and talented employees who would serve up fresh blends every day. In 2003, Bella weaned her son John off caffeine and began slowly introducing him to organic farming methods as he transitioned from a child into an adult. As part of this process, John started growing his own beans at their farmstead; now known as The Bean Farm.). Weddington is located on the Nantahala River and has a post office from 1854 until it closed in 1960. The first settler in Weddington was John Weddington who arrived in 1775 and laid out a town site on the riverbank near present day Weddington Elementary School. He named his town after his wife Rebecca Stroud who had died when he was only 21 years old while serving as captain of an expedition against the Cherokee nation during the American Revolution. Weddington's economic development began with its location on the Nantahala River. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1854, makingWeddington one of the earliest communities to exploit natural resources in this region. In 1886, oil exploration began here, providing impetus for industries such as trucking and plastics production that have continued through today. By 1940, WeddINGTON had become known for its poultry products exports to other countries due to its fertile land and good water supply; however manufacturing declined thereafter until it again experienced resurgence starting around 2000 with new businesses opening up such as apparel manufacturers JBS Outlet Company and Hanes Corporation among others In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within wedlington including many new homes being built along Withlacoochee Creek adjacent to Central Park which will also add much needed open space to this community once complete
