National Guard gifts have been a part of the Waynesville community for many years. The North Carolina National Guard has donated many items and services to the community, from rifles and pistols to food and clothing. Gifts have ranged in price from small donations to large juries that award grants or scholarships. This paper will explore how the National Guard has influenced Waynesville through its donation history, as well as provide insights on what these gifts have meant to the community. The first national guard gift was a rifle and pistol donated in 1907. It was not until 1917 that a grenade launcher was gifted to the town by General James Longstreet, Commander-in-Chief of American forces in World War I. The grenade launcher helped arm Waynesville with firepower during wartime. In 1941, another rifle and pistol were donated by General James Longstreet Jr., Commander-in-Chief of American forces in World War II. These gifts helped create an Snider Museum located in downtown Waynesville which preserves military memorabilia from both wars. 2 years later, on December 12th, 1943, the North Carolina National Guard gave birth to our current JROTC program when they contributed 10 M4 carbines for use by our students at Our Lady’s High School! This gift proved very important as it allowed us to grow into one of the largest JROTC programs in the country! In addition to its donation history, the North Carolina National Guard also plays an important role within our community by providing resources such as manpower and support during times of crisis or emergency. For example, when Hurricane Floyd barreled through southern Appalachia in 1999 there was no other option but for local residents to call upon their NCNG troops for help! Throughout its history,the North Carolina National Guard has shown itself as a generous source of gift ideas and support for Waynesville residents! We hope this paper provides insight into why this organization continues to be so important and valuable to our community today!

Waynesville is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is the county seat of Alamance County. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first permanent European Settler in what would become Alamance County was John Saunders in 1798. He and his family were among the first white settlers to cross the mountains from Scotland into what is now Alamance County. Saunders had a plantation on Hiwassee Creek which he named "Saunders's Valley." In 1810, he donated land to build a log courthouse and jail in honor of Judge Samuel Wright who had presided over his earlier trial there for computer crime charges against James Broughton (the founder of Raleigh). In 1812, Waynesville was incorporated as an independent town under the name "Wynnewood". The first post office was established in 1814 with Jno Pritchard as postmaster. The town experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location near several mills and other businesses that contributed to its success during this time. By 1830, it had outgrown Wynnewood and became known as "Waynesville." It remained an important center for trade until after World War II when Interstate 95 cut through the town and replaced much of its reliance on transportation by road. Today, Waynesville retains some characteristics of its rural past including subsistence agriculture and local manufacturing although most residents are employed within commuting distance by major employers located elsewhere within North Carolina or Raleigh-Durham NC Area

Waynesville is a small town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Waynesville were the Cherokees who came there in 1814. Then there were white settlers such as Isaac Brown and James Henderson who arrived in 1827 and 1830 respectively. William Waynes founded Waynesville on November 10, 1836. He was a lawyer and judge who served on the Vance County Court from 1837 to 1840. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell passed through Vance County looking for new territory to organize his army after the US Civil War began. He found many people living around Waynesville due to its strategic location near Durham and Raleigh by way of roads that connected those towns with each other and with other parts of North Carolina. When General Ewell reached Waynesville on October 12th he ordered all men over 21 years old to leave their homes for three days because he thought they had supported the Union side during the war. Many of these men decided to stay because they needed food and shelter from Union forces that were raiding their settlements throughout central North Carolina at that time.
Waynesville is located in Swain County, North Carolina. The population was 8,975 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Swain County. Waynesville was founded in 1796 by General John Neville and family as a small community on Hargrave's Creek. In 1820, the town site was moved to its current location on Waynesville Creek after being chosen as the best spot for an agricultural settlement by surveyors hired by Daniel Boone. The original name of the town was Allendale, but it became Waynesville because President George Washington named it after his friend and mentor Colonel William Johnston Wayne of Virginia.
