The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History of Waynesville, North Carolina began in the early 1800s when Marines from the 1st Regiment, United States Marine Corps were stationed in Waynesville for military service. The Marines would visit local businesses and offer their services to help with tasks such as farming and forestry. In 1894, marines from the 2nd Regiment, USMC founded the Marine Barracks in Waynesville. The Marines would stay at the barracks until 1945 when it was destroyed during World War II. Since then, marines have donated many items to various organizations throughout Waynesville. Some of these items include a monument to marine soldiers who died in World War II located at Memorial Park; a library building that was donated by marines in 1969; and a statue of an American flag located on Main Street.

Waynesville is a town in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. Waynesville is the county seat of Wake County. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Waynesville were Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild game near the bend in the creek that flows through town. In 1785, Colonel James Fenton built his headquarters here and named it for General George Washington, who had recently vacated his home on Mount Vernon to campaign in North Carolina. In 1812, General John Brown's raid into South Carolina destroyed much of Fenton's plantation here and made Waynesville an important center for slave trade; however, Bacon's Creek eventually became a natural watercourse providing clean drinking water to all residents of Wake County by 1850. By 1860, when Wake County was created from portions of Durham and Johnston counties (including present-day Raleigh), Waynesville had become one of its most important localities with a population over 10,,000 (). When American Civil War began in 1861, many men from nearby Raleigh enlisted in Confederate forces as soldiers. Many men from Waynesville served cavalry units such as "Henderson's Horse" commanded by Major General Edwin Mowery (). A few weeks after Fort Sumter was besieged by Confederate forces at April 12th 1865 (), Union troops attacked and captured Waynesville without warning or battle (). Most inhabitants fled into neighboring Durham or Johnston Counties but some chose to stay and fight (); these veterans founded Camp Casey () on land donated by Major General Henderson Howard (). After the war ended in 1865 there were few civilian opportunities for citizens so they organized themselves into benevolent societies like the Ladies Benevolent Society () which still operates today as a social services agency with programs including education for underprivileged students., As early as 1870s there were plans to create a railroad through town connecting Raleigh with Charlotte and other northern markets.; however this project never materialized due to lack of money,. In 1881120 acres (48 km2) were patented within present-day Waynesville limits making it one of America’s largest agricultural towns; during this time tobacco farming played an extremely important role due to climate changes caused by global warming;; However because tobacco production requires vast amounts of land it has not been very profitable over time;;;; However recent advances in technology have allowed some entrepreneurs to start up businesses such as green energy farms,,,, One particular business that took off during this period was called “The Gap” which provided employment for about 100 people during lunchtime every day.; Today “The Gap” remains an iconic landmark located just outside town limits serving locally roasted coffee beans., On July 1st 1892 two detachments United States Colored Troops arrived at Fort McAllister disembarking their transports bound for Texas ; they established Camp Hereford here soon afterwards,,,, This event marked beginning of white settlement within present day Waynesville limits.– One group consisted mostly Irish immigrants while the other group consisted mainly African American soldiers who came north along with their families
