Waynesville is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Durham County. Waynesville is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The first European to visit Waynesville was Captain John Smith in 1614 when he and his men were exploring the area for new trade routes. In 1785, Englishman James Bowles founded a sawmill and gristmill in what is now known as Bowles Street. He also built a three-story log cabin on an old millrace that still stands today. In 1827, David Fenton built a small frame home on Church Street in what is now known as Waynesville Mills. He became one of the most successful farmers in the region and kept many of his holdings until his death in 1893. His wife, Evalyn Fenton, made her fortune running several stores and restaurant businesses before she died in 1922. She was buried at First Presbyterian Church east of town near where her husband's house still stands today. In 1892, Waynesville Electric Light & Power Company was chartered to provide power for local homes and businesses from its original site north of current day Old Mill Road (present day State Highway 421). The company soon grew into one of the leading electric companies in America with over 1 million customers by 1923! In 1945, TV Guide named Waynesville "America's Most Beautiful Town" due to its clean streets and rural setting! After World War II ended, traffic congestion caused by people commuting to jobs outside of town began to increase; however, this issue eventually solved after construction began on Interstate 95 which bypassed town entirely! Today, Waynesville remains an agricultural center with dairy farms dotting the landscape along with dozens of hog breeder ranches; however, it also has become well known for its golf courses including two professional ones – one within walking distance of downtown and one further out on Long Pond Lake which offers excellent fishing opportunities!
