The history of the navy in North Carolina dates back to 1814, when a small fleet of wooden boats was sent to patrol the coast. The first ship in the fleet was named HMS Raleigh, and it served as a tender for the Duke of York's squadron. In 1815, another small ship, HMS Savannah, was commissioned into the navy. The navy began its construction program in earnest in 1816 with the purchase of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. This led to an increased number of naval vessels on hand at various points along the coastline. The navy also purchased two warships from France: L'Orient and L'Aigle. The first vessel was launched on October 21, 1817 and served as flagship for Admiral Catesby during his Expedition against Spanish Havana. By 1830, there were twenty-four naval vessels assigned to Coastal Forces stationed throughout North Carolina. In 1830, Rear Admiral John Rodgers assumed command of the Coastal Forces and ordered a new program designed to improve naval capabilities along Carolina's shoreline. One such initiative involved constructing two large Naval Barracks at Beaufort and Wilmington (later known as Fort Fisher). These barracks housed up to six ships apiece and functioned as an important training ground for sailors preparing for more active duty within the navy or outfitting merchant shipping for operations offshore. One significant achievement reached by Rear Admiral Rodgers during this time period is that he helped establish US Navy presence in Havana during what is now known as Operation Mongoose (1830-1839). During this campaign, Rear Admiral Rodgers successfully fought off repeated Spanish attacks on UBSSA San Cristobal before leading a force consisting of USS Constitution (of which he was captain) and USS Monitor into Havana Harbor on November 2nd 1830 under cover of darkness; only days after American Samoa had become partSDA territory following their annexation by America! It has been said that "Without Commodore John Rodgers ... [Havana] would have reverted back to Spanish hands". After returning from Cuba with prizes including five cannons and three Salvadoran flags captured by American forces - all while under cover of night - Rear Admiral Rodgers organized a task force composed entirely maritime personnel which invaded Panama City on January 17th 1831 in order seize control over that city's port facilities - thus beginning American Colonization efforts there! A plaque located at Naval Barracks at Beaufort commemorates USS Constitution’s role in this event: “This bark Neptune speedily transported Captains John Rodgers & James Cook relief goods after they arrived too early Charles Darwin prevented them from being conveied directly to England”

The USS Constitution was a United States Navy ship that served in the American Revolution. The ship was built at Norfolk, Virginia, and launched on July 4, 1775. She was renamed SS America in 1836 and used as a steamer until World War II when she was scrapped.
Washington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the seat of Catawba County. The population was 26,291 as of the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Catawba County. It is also one of two cities in North Carolina with a population over 100,000 (the other being Charlotte). Washington was founded by German colonists in 1754 on land known today as Point Pleasant Beach. In 1814, Washington became part of Henderson County when that area was divided between South Carolina and North Carolina following the American Civil War. The city's name comes from George Washington who lived near present-day Point Pleasant Beach before moving to Mount Vernon in 1799. In 1860, Washington became an independent county after Henderson County was divided into seven smaller counties; its then-county president Lucius Clay recommended that the new county be named for General Robert E. Lee who had surrendered at Appomattox Court House three years earlier during the American Civil War. Washington experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following World War II due to its location on military bases and its access to education and industry associated with those military establishments. However, since 2000s there has been a decline in both economic development and population growth due to many factors such as high crime rates which have led to declines in nightlife activity, job opportunities and public transportation options downtown

Washington was first settled by English colonists in the late 16th century. They built a small town on the western side of the Ohio River, and named it for General George Washington, who had fought in the French and Indian War. The town grew quickly, and by 1790 it had 300 residents. In 1819, however, Washington's Treaty of Ghent ended the American Civil War, and he never visited North Carolina again. In 1865, when Confederate forces captured Fort Fisher in Wilmington (now Jacksonville), North Carolina, they burned most of the town to remove all evidence that its citizens had collaborated with Union forces. The destruction of Washington did nothing to improve relations between North Carolina and South Carolina; in fact, they only worsened after their states seceded from the Union. In 1920 Congress passed a bill designating May 12th as National Historical Day in honor of both Washington and Wilmington. Today Washington is a ghost town - its only inhabitant is one passing tourist who spends his time at nearby Mount Pisgah Park. But its history deserves more than just a passing mention on National Historical Day; it deserves better than that! For over 240 years Washington has been an important center for trade and commerce within what is now known as easternNorth Carolina - home to some of the poorest soil on earth (and one of America's oldest cities) yet also proud of its own contributions to American culture AND economy. And yet despite this proud history little has been done to preserve or promote these accomplishments - instead much has been done to erode them over time!
