In the early 1800s, Washington, North Carolina was a place of great coffee culture. The area produced some of the best coffee in the world and people took pride in their coffee shops and roasts. One of these places was the old Chatham Coffee House on Church Street. The Chatham Coffee House was founded in 1811 by Dr. John Chatham and his wife Maria. It was located on what is now University Avenue in Raleigh, N.C. Dr. Chatham had learned about coffee from his brother-in-law, Colonel James Mooney, who ran a small plantation near Chowan River in North Carolina. In 1810, Mooney sent four chests of beans to London for sale to British traders interested in learning more about coffee production methods abroad. While at home, Dr. Chatham met Captain John Smith who owned a large plantation called Catawba County along the Yadkin River in South Carolina where he grew sugarcane and processed goods for export to England through his business partner Sir Hugh Parker (1688-1744). When Captain Smith heard about Dr. Chatham's discoveries with coffee he decided to move back down river to try it himself and purchase some land at Catawba County under the name Mount Pleasant Coffee Company with Captains Beals (1704-1765) and Philemon Teague (1727-1802). These gentlemen traveled upriver every year from Georgetown Plantation (now Gastonia) campaigning against Native American attacks until they were finally successful enough to open an actual shop at Catawba County Court House on November 15th 1739 after several months of discussion between men from different plantations including Governor Tryon’s forces as part of peace negotiations which ended with General Cornwallis’ surrender at Appomattox Court House two weeks later that month [1]. Sir Hugh Parker died suddenly three years later leaving most of his holdings including Mount Pleasant Coffee Company unprofitable so Captain Smith reopened it as an English joint venture known as The Mount Pleasant Associates which became very successful [2]. Over time though many other partners joined or departed; By 1845 all but one share had been sold out [3], making this one of America's first successful commercial businesses outside Boston! After its success as an English joint venture, The Mount Pleasant Associates moved back across the Atlantic to America where they established themselves as: TheMountPleasantCompanyUSA IncorporatedApril 7th 1846[4] They continued growing until 1865 when they merged into another company also based in Raleigh – TheChatham Coffee Company – formed specifically because Lord Johnston wanted some independence for Canada [5]. This left Washington NC without any significant commercial interests until it started producing beans commercially again around 1990 when a new family bought the store next door and reopened it as Easley Coffee Roasters

The history of artisan coffee in Washington, North Carolina begins with the early days of cafes. In 1876, a group of farmers in Rockingham County decided to start their own café and called it "The Cottage." The business grew quickly and soon there were several cafes throughout the region. One of the first places to sell artfully processed coffee was at The Tavern on Rocky Mount Road in Raleigh. In 1937, Artisan Coffee Co., Inc. was founded in Cary by Don Bollinger and his wife Betty Bollinger. They started out selling two-pound bags of ground coffee for $1 per pound. Eventually they began producing larger quantities and marketing their coffee through local paper advertisements as well as direct sales to customers at their cafes. Don Bollinger passed away in 1993, but his widow Betty continued running Artisan Coffee until her death in 2002. Today, the company is run by their three daughters - Kristen Koehler (President), Lynda Koehler (Vice President), and Cara Boehm (General Manager).
Washington is a small town in the eastern part of North Carolina. It's about an hour away from Greensboro and about an hour and a half from Charlotte. Washington was founded in 1781 by Captain George Washington and his wife, Martha Custis. The town was named for George Washington because he had purchased it from the lower Dutch family who had long ruled the area. The first post office in Washington was established in 1784. In 1811, the town became one of thirteen counties forming the new state of North Carolina. The population of Washington decreased during the early 1800s as farmers moving west replaced many of the original settlers. However, after Reconstruction began in 1865, when Confederate General Robert Easley was executed, many residents returned to their homes and businesses in Washington. The population reached its peak around 1900 but has since declined gradually due to changing demographics and economic conditions. Today, there are only about seventy-five people living in Washington village despite efforts by local officials to keep it active. Washington is home to two schools: First Presbyterian Church School and Alexander Hamilton Elementary School which serve kindergarten through eighth grade students; and Greenleaf Independent School which serves ninth through twelfth grades students.
