In 1945, the United States Air Force was activated and soon became a major force in the American war effort. TheAAF had two main goals: to provide air support for ground troops and to protect Allied bombers operating over Germany. These capabilities have allowed it to provide support for operations in many parts of the world at once, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen.
