As the world knows, coffee is a plant that has been around for over 7000 years. The first mention of coffee was in ancient Egyptian writings. Coffee beans were mentioned in Spanish documents in 1540 and Portuguese documents in 1493. The Javanese people, who lived on the Indonesian island of Java, had discovered ground coffee beans in the 6th century AD and brewed it using hot water and leaves. This beverage was called Kopi Cina or China Coffee. The Dutch established a colony on Roanoke Island in 1607 and began to trade with India for goods such as spices and cloth. They also began to explore what lay beyond their shores, which led them to discover Java and Indonesia. One of the first Europeans to taste coffee was Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer who sailed along the Indonesian coast in 1524-25. He reported back that he had tasted something “odd” but could not identify it because it did not resemble any known plants or animals he had seen before. In 1609/10, another Italian sailor, Matteo Ricciardo, explored Java from Bali through Sulawesi before returning home with some remarkable Indian spices that he traded with his brother Giovanni della Porta (1504-1568). Dutch traders soon became interested in this new discovery too and started trading with both India and Indonesia for coffee beans, tea plantations, ivory tusks, cloves (from Sri Lanka), peppermint oil (from Sumatra), sandalwood oil (from Malaya), manuscripts written byJava monks during the 17th century—all of which helped contribute to Dutch colonialism across Southeast Asia! By 1638 they controlled all of Java except Aceh where there remained sporadic war between Netherlands East Indies Company troops garrisoned there until 1945! The Dutch were very successful at growing coffee crops while raiding other parts of Southeast Asia for spices and artifacts! As early as 1660 they noted that “coffee grows best where wetter climates abound” so they must have found something special about this obscure bean! World War II interrupted these well-intentioned efforts by the Dutch government to expand their empire further into Southeast Asia! However Coffees continued to be grown throughout most of WWII as Allied forces bombed Japanese cities; however there was no production available back then due to enemy occupation!! postwar Japan opened its markets again after winning World War II including East Timor where coffee trees were planted especially because Timorese are unique breeders of high altitude beans!!! After Japan's surrender North Korea exported some coffees from her own plantation under Korean name Maga Coffee When communist North Korea introduced socialism starting from 1961 Fidel Castro decided against buying any more raw materials from South Korea so instead started creating his own export business exporting roasted Javarian beans!! This trade stopped when North Koreans invaded South Korea in 1967!!!!!!!!!
