Coffee has been brewed in North Carolina for over a hundred years. The first coffee beans were roasted by Captain John Southerland and others at an early Transylvania plantation in 1824. Coffee was then brought to Wake Forest by Reverend James White in 1828. In 1865, General Taylor founded the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, which allowed coffee to be grown on UNC's campus. In 1886, Raleigh's Union Station became the first stop on the Underground Railroad when fugitives seeking freedom stopped there for coffee while en route to Virginia. After UNC moved to Greensboro in 1949, coffee continued to be grown at UNC's Raleigh Campus until 1974 when it was transferred to Wake Forest. By 1988, all of Wake Forest had its own coffee roasting plant and production began statewide. Today, Wake Forest is one of the largest producer and consumers of quality coffee in the United States.

In 1755, the British captured Fort Duquesne on the edge of Charlotte Harbor and used it as a trading post for goods reaching America. The town that developed around Fort Duquesne became known as Wilmington after General JohnWilmington (1728-1795), who served as commander of British forces at Wilmington during the American Revolution. At the same time, Wake Forest was founded by Presbyterian missionaries under Rev. Drury Lewis (1715-1800). In 1819, North Carolina became a United States state and Wake Forest became its second university. The school's first president was Daniel Bible (1802-1827).
