The Coast Guard has been in Wake Forest since 1917. At that time, the first Coast Guard Station was established in Wake Forest. The station was later moved to Durham and then to Raleigh. In 1949, the Coast Guard Station in Raleigh was closed and the present day Coast Guard Station at Wake Forest was opened. The original equipment for the station consisted of a houseboat and a motorboat. In 1957, a helicopter was added to the station and in 1988, an airplane hangar was built. Today, the station is home to three helicopters and three airplanes. The Coast Guard Auxiliary provides support to the Coast Guard Station at Wake Forest by providing personnel, supplies, training materials, tools, and other assistance. The Auxiliary also provides programs such as safety awareness campaigns and recreational boating opportunities for residents of southern North Carolina. This support goes back many years and includes both active duty members of the Coast Guard as well as civilians who volunteer their time out of their own homes!

The Coast Guard has been a vital part of American society for over 190 years. The service was established on April 26, 1837 as the United States Life-Saving Service. It grew out of the need for coast guard personnel to help protect America's coastline from maritime threats such as pirates and smugglers. Today, the Coast Guard provides protection for both domestic and international waters. The service is made up of more than 12,000 members who are spread throughout 41 states and Puerto Rico. The Coast Guard also operates more than 350 boats which can be used in a variety of tasks including search and rescue, Marine traffic control, law enforcement, coastal security and environmental monitoring.
