Lee offered to give up his army if Wake Forest would become a military academy for South Carolinians studying war. In 1896, the school changed its name to Wake Forest University after buying land on which it now sits. In 1865, while fighting against Union forces at Chancellorsville, General Clement A. Maclay lost an arm and was ordered by General Ulysses S. Grant not to pursue the enemy any further because he could not bring himself to kill another human being. This caused great heartache for General Maclay's family as they saw their only son lose an arm during battle; however, this experience also helped him develop his skills as a leader and strategist. It was at this time that General Maclay met Eliza Phillips Wake who would eventually lead him back into battle two years later at Gettysburg with similar success The first president of Wake Forest University was Reverend Samuel Phillips Wake who served from 1892-1897 He had many notable accomplishments such as helping found Trinity College (now Duke University) in Durham NC and building both the Fine Arts Building on campus as well as starting what is now known as WF’s athletics department After leaving office Reverend Philips' widow Mrs Eliza Pugh took over until her death in 1923 before Dr James Broughton took over until he retired in 1951 Mrs Pugh's successor Dr James Broughton served until his death in 1973 before Mrs Elizabeth Broughton took over again until she resigned due to health reasons . From then on it was Dr Elizabeth Bowen who led the university through many changes including becoming coeducational when it became an all female institution and increasing diversity among student body with African American students making up 25% of undergraduate enrollment by 1980 . On October 14th 2008 Dr Elizabeth Bowen announced her retirement effective January 1st 2009 after serving since then
