When the United States Army was founded in 1775, it had a small army of about 2,000 soldiers. In 1815, the army grew to over 20,000 men and women. The first military deployment of American troops to Wake Forest was in 1814 when General Andrew Johnson sent 1,500 men and women to help suppress a slave insurrection in South Carolina. In 1865, after the Civil War ended, the United StatesArmy withdrew from Richmond and made way for Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s forces. The Union Army occupied Wake Forest following the surrender of Lee and his armies there on April 9th 1865. The USArmy moved into barracks next door to De Witt Hall on North Campus until 1918 when they pulled out all but 12 horses and four wagons that were used for supplies during World War I. And so it was that one small church (in a small town) suddenly became one of America's preeminent research universities - home not just to students but alsoto faculty members who helped shape American culture throughout much of the twentieth century!
