Thomasville is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by General Robert E. Lee and named for him. The first coffeehouses in Thomasville were established in 1827 by Captain James Caldwell and Colonel John Cushing as a result of their visit to the area during the survey of Henderson County that year. By 1830 there were four coffeehouses operating in what is now downtown Thomasville: One near Meeting House Street and Elm Street; two on King Street between Highways 92nd and 94th Streets; and one on Orange Street between I-85/I-480 (now US 301) and US 701 (now US 321). In 1831 Captain Caldwell opened his own grocery store next door to his first house which became known as Caldwell's CoffeeHouse No. 1 or simply "Caldwell's." This house still stands today on North Main Street within walking distance of both downtown Thomasville businesses and Campbell University’s main campus. In 1835Captain Caldwell moved from his house to what is now Fourth Avenue NE where he operated until his death in 1850 subject to several moves over time including one location to what is now Second Avenue NE before settling permanently at Fourth Avenue NE in 1851 where he continued operation until his death less than one year later In 1840 Governor Tryon appointed Mr. Rufus Griggs as collector for Henderson County In 1865 Captain John Silliphant took over running the business which then became known as Silliphants CoffeeHouse No. 1 In 1870 Mrs Jane Cary started another grocery store directly across from her husband’s earlier business called Cary’s Grocery Store which lasted into the late 1970s when it was taken over by Kroger Supermarkets Incorporated and later demolished . In 1924the current building erected on Third Avenue NE housing City Hall replaced an earlier structure that had been located on East High School Road just east of present day Third Avenue NE

It lies on a bend in the Yadkin River and has been located on this location since 1792. The town was incorporated in 1880. Thomasville is named for General Nathanael Greene who fought in the American Revolution and then served as Governor of Georgia from 1785 to 1788 before moving east to join George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War. After being discharged from his military service, Greene returned to Thomasville and began an agricultural career which he continued until his death in 1802. In 1814, General Robert McNeill attacked Fort Donelson on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau and lost many men while defending against an enemy much larger than him. As a result of this battle, Kentucky Senator James Kenedy donated land near Thomasville for erecting a Military Academy which would later become University of Virginia (now known as Virginia Tech). Aftermath of the Battle at Fort Donelson led to increased calls for Reconstruction which began in 1865 with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In 1868, John Coady formed what became known as "The Cotton Giants" because they were able to bring cotton prices down so low that it created opportunities for other businesses not related to agriculture such as manufacturing and transportation companies such as railroadroads and hotels/motels.).
