Tarboro is one of the oldest settlements in North Carolina and has been inhabited by the Cherokee for over two hundred years. The area was first settled by English colonists in 1624. On July 12, 1795, John Sevier organized a militia to suppressa slave uprising that took place in Charlotte County. The town's first store opened on September 5, 1814. In 1832, Tarboro became the capital of Granville County and its first courthouse was built on Main Street. When Raleigh moved back to its original form in 1951, Tarboro lost its status as county seat again but it retains its importance as a cultural and historical center within Granville County
