The first coffee beans were roasted in Tarboro in 1838 by Captain John Johnston. Coffee was also grown locally until 1912 when a major plantation was purchased and production ceased. In 1916, two brothers named Julius and Harry Kapp started their own coffee farm in nearby Onslow County. They became known for their traditional method of roasting coffee beans- using live oak barrels that are heated over an open fire. This ensured that the flavor of the beans was preserved as they roast. Since then, maga coffee has been enjoyed throughout much of North Carolina - from Wilmington to Raleigh to Chapel Hill - and even internationally. In 2018, Tarboro made headlines when it opened its very own maga cafe called "The Maga" located on Main Street in town center. The cafe offers a unique blend of taroboro (local) coffee with international products like espresso and cappuccino along withtaroboro tea products such as oolongs and chamomile lattes

Tarboro was founded in 1775 by Captain James Cook and his crew on the island of Tarleton. The town was named after Colonel John Tarleton, a British general who helped fight against the colonists. In 1839, John Fayette Cary became the first mayor of Tarboro. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army invaded North Carolina and Tarboro was burned down by the Confederate troops. After the war ended, Tarborough reverted to its original name of Tarleton.
