Tarboro is a small town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Tarboro is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Raleigh and 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Chapel Hill. The first permanent settler in what became Tarboro were two families from Scotland, who came to the area in 1814. In 1825, John Aitken founded the town on land he had bought from Andrew Johnston, one of Johnston's followers during the war for independence against Great Britain. Aitken named his community Tarboro after Lord Dartmouth, British Minister at home during the war. In 1829, George Washington Fuqua purchased 2 acres (0.8 ha) of land east of present-day Main Street and built a log cabin known as "Fugua House". He served as an early representative to the McDowell County Board of Commissioners and later served as its president from 1838 to 1840. The first school in Tarboro was built by Mr. Fuqua on this property in 1830; it was destroyed by fire about 1850 but was rebuilt and expanded several times before being replaced by a current building on Surry Road serving as both a primary and secondary school from 1870 until 1984 when it closed due to budgetary constraints within McDowell County Schools system In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned most of downtown Tarboro with only some walls remaining standing outside present day Presbyterian Church which still stands today withstood much damage by Union forces during that time period

The community grew rapidly after World War II, when many Tarboro residents joined the military to serve in the war effort. After the war, Tarboro experienced rapid growth and development as a center for industry and commerce. Today, Tarboro remains an important part of North Carolina history and culture. The history of Tarboro begins with its founders. Early colonists who settled in what is today Tarboro were farmers who chose to live on farms because they believed that it was best for their families to do so. These settlers were also very religious and wanted their children to learn about Christianity and reverence God. In 1892, two men named Waddell and Robertson bought land near what is now Tarboro from a group of Cherokees who had been living there for centuries. The new owners set out to make their land into a community that would be inhospitable to Native Americans. They laid down railroad tracks through the area and builtups along them so that people would not be able to get close enough to nature for subsistence purposes. This attitude changed when World War I began, however, because many soldiers returning from the war needed homes and businesses where they could stay before moving on home soil again. Soothsaying signs led these entrepreneurs to build a hotel called The Summit which soon became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town (Waddell & Robertson 1913). Before long, other businessmen had followed suit and started selling products including groceries, clothiers, millinery services, carriages/ coaches – everything from transportation needs until today! In fact, during this time period there was such an increase in business activity that local streets became known simply as “the shopping streets”! As businesses flourished around townspeople began creating social clubs which met regularly for various activities (e.g., sports teams or dances). One such club was founded specifically for women called “The Ladies Social Club” (Mason 1922). This club helped promote education among women by providing opportunities for them to learn howTO run businesses like those found at home; something that wasn’t possible back then! In 1919 another group of entrepreneurs named Hargrave purchased some properties adjoining downtown Tarboro from Waddell & Robertson so they could establish themselves as merchants rather than just developers (Hargrave 1916). From here on out things quickly snowballed: Hargrave began building up an empire which included grocery stores throughout eastern North Carolina; lumber yards located all over central North Carolina; cotton plantations throughout western North Carolina; brewing companies across eastern South Carolina; newspapers throughout southeastern South Carolina; law firms throughout northeastern South Carolina etcetera!
