Statesville is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haywood County. The name "Statesville" comes from James Robertson's 1781 purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) of land from the Catawba Indians for $10 per acre. Robertson named his new settlement after himself and his family: Jameson's Valley, in honor of his father-in-law, George Jameson. In 1868, Statesville became part of the new state of South Carolina and lost its municipal rights to Haywood County. In 1853 Colonel Thomas Polk purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) east of present day State Capitol Complex from David Williamson for $5 per acre for development into a town known as Polk's Landing or Polycarp Point - it would be renamed Statesvillet after General William Tolsom during Reconstruction days when it became an important stop on road trips by Confederate generals seeking to learn about Union strategy while visiting South Carolina! Today we can see evidence that Tolsom visited Statesvillet twice during this time - once while driving north on I-77 just past exit 191B near modern day Hillsborough High School; again while driving south off I-277 just past exit 9 near present day Chapel Hill University! By 1865 Cornelius Vanderbilt had acquired 5 square miles (12 km²) northeast of downtown Jacksonburg via purchases from other Confederate leaders - he renamed it Jacksonville Beach after Jacksonville Florida where he lived until his death in 1886 aged 80 years old! The city center moved closer to shorelines along Bulls Bayou starting around 1870 as developers built houses along both banks using salvaged materials available from destroyed coastal towns elsewhere in South Carolina!
