Statesville is a small town located in the Outer Banks region of North Carolina. The population was 5,545 at the 2010 census. Statesville is home to three colleges- UNCG, NC State, and Davidson- and two universities- Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. The economy of Statesville is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. Some of the local businesses include Manufacturing Extension Service (MES), Coca Cola Bottling Plant #1, petrochemical plant, distillery, golf course, hotel/motel and several restaurants. The first settlers in what would become Statesville were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1670. They named the area after their friend Casparus van der Meer. In 1729 English colonists arrived with a group of Huguenots from France. The English name for the area was changed to Statesvillet because they thought it sounded like "states" or "the states". In 1809 United Kingdom forces sacked the Dutch colony of Roanoke which led to many refugees coming to what would become Statesville looking for new homes. In 1827 Union General John Buford founded campgrounds around this area for use by troops during the American Civil War as well as nearby Wilmington Naval Yard where he developed land that would later be used for Stateville College . Many people from both sides of the war came through here including Confederate General Robert Ewell who had his headquarters at Wilmington Naval Yard before moving upriver to Durham Court House where he coordinated operations against Grant’s Union army outside Durham City In 1861 when Confederate General Robert Ewell decided not to fight on April 12th along with most other Confederate generals EA wells surrendered his entire army at Greensboro without any fighting taking place until May 2nd when Battleship USS Tennessee ran aground off shore caused by Confederate minesweeper HMS Dolphin which blockaded entrance into harbor

Statesville is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The first settlement in what is now Statesville was made by white settlers in 1784. The town was named after George Washington and it was founded on December 26, 1824. In 1829, Statesville became an independent republic following the American Civil War and it retained its name until 1861 when it became part of Confederate South Carolina. On November 1, 1865, Union general Robert Ewell decided to blockade Confederate-held Savannah due to fears that if Savannah were captured by Confederate forces, other Southern ports would also be blockaded and this would starve the Confederacy's soldiers and civilians. Ewell ordered his army to cross over the Yadkin River into North Carolina without orders from higher up and march through Statesville towards Savannah. A group of local militiamen managed to prevent this from happening and fought back against Ewell's forces as they crossed into North Carolina. Aftermath of battle: As a result of the battle around Statesville, more than sixty men were killed or wounded including General Robert Ewell himself
In 1776, the British invaded North Carolina and established a military garrison at Fort Raleigh. The British also built a fort on what is now called Tryon Street in Statesville. In 1779, the British withdrew from North Carolina and the fort was abandoned. The town of Statesville developed around the fort and other local buildings. In 1814, the United States acquired North Carolina from Great Britain and made it an official state. The first U.S. Congress meeting in Charlotte took place at State College in Charlotte on March 4, 1815.
