Statesville is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit the area were Frenchmen and Native Americans in 1675. Englishman William Tryon landed at what is now Statesville on September 20, 1755, as part of his efforts to gain possession of what he believed was land grant from King George II for the Loyalists during the American Revolution. Tryon named it after himself and built a small fort here to protect himself and his people from Indian attack. In 1814, when Raleigh became the capital of North Carolina, Tryon's fort was re-occupied by General James Johnston and moved north to Raleigh with Johnston's army during the Battle of Kinston. In 1819 Statesville voted to become a separate town under the new state constitution. It remained an unincorporated community until 1892 when it became adjacent to Charlotte along I-85/I-77. That year, it incorporated as Stateville Township with a population of 597 residents (down from 1,022 in 1870). With its incorporation came more municipal services such as Streets Department and Parks Department which continue through present day operations including streetlights and water systems that are still operated today by local governments throughout Charlotte metropolitan area The original courthouse building located on New Bern Road no longer exists but is used as a private home; however some portions oforiginal structure remain extant including bell tower which has been restored In 1925 Statevilles first high school opened which later became known as Hinds Community High School In 1962 Statevilles first library opened which later became known as Barnes Library
