The North Carolina Army National Guard's 106th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, known as the "Fighting 116th" is one of the most decorated units in the United States military. The brigade has been deployed to more than 20 countries and has earned 13 Distinguished Unit Citations (DUCS), six Silver Star Medals, five Bronze Star Medals, two Purple Heart Medals, three Navy Crosses and four Air Medal Awards. The unit was first organized on January 15, 1942 at San Antonio Barracks in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was activated on October 1, 1942 and assigned to the 8th Infantry Division in World War II. The regiment served in Europe as part of Operation Overlord and fought at Battle of Normandy while also serving as a garrison unit in Germany until May 1945. After World War II ended the 106th Infantry Brigade Combat Team was demobilized on November 15, 1946 at Camp Kilmer outside of New York City. It re-activated on December 12, 1949 at Fort Bragg near Durham County in North Carolina under command of 2nd Infantry Division elements then transferred to 3rd Infantry Division for duty during the Korean War where it participated as an attached unit to 2nd Battalion/2nd Regiment 327th Infantry Regiment from 1951-1953 before being reassigned to 1st Battalion/5th Regiment 326th Infantry Regiment for duty with 711st Airborne Brigade during Operation Desert Storm from 1991-1994. In 1994 the brigade was redesignated 107th Infantry Brigade Combat Team which continued assignment to 3rd infantry division responsible for operations within 24 hour radius around Charlotte NC including mission support activities inside and outside Charlotte city limits while also providing security services for St Patrick’s Day Parade that year located north of downtown Charlotte On September 11 terrorist attacks resulted in activation of 103d Airlift Wing - Army Reserve Component which provided aeriallift service using C-130 Hercules aircraft equipped with intelligence gathering radar systems providing real time situational awareness during airlift operations between Charlotte Hornets airport and Fort Bragg following Hurricane Floyd Since 2000 whenArmy National Guard 126TH Field Artillery Battery arrived from Georgia it has been manned by state legislators who are members or former members

Statesville, North Carolina is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Statesville is one of three towns in Wilkesboro County and is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. The settler community in what is now Statesville was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1798. He named it for his native Virginia, since that state had been part of the United States since 1781. This created new possibilities for businesses and individuals to move into statesville as it became an easier path for goods and people to get around than going through Johnston County on the east side of the mountains. This success allowed Statesville to become one of the most important towns in Wilkesboro County during its early years as a county seat (1824-1868). In addition to its importance as a local center, Statesville also served as an important depot on Interstate 25 between Raleigh andWilkesboroduring this time period.
