Thereafter, business was conducted over horse-drawn wagons or by boat from various points along the Cape Fear River until 1865 when a railroad arrived and made shipping much easier. During World War II (1939-1945), many local farmers became involved with war production through producing munitions and other materials for the war effort. Some residents also joined the military and worked on farms near Fort Bragg or Fayetteville while others pooled their resources to establish cooperatives that raised crops for export during wartime times. After World War II ended, many farmers returned to their original occupations but some continued to grow coffee because it remained an important crop around Spring Lake until 1992 when all commercial production stopped due mainly to environmental concerns about pesticide use in coffee fields across America

The Spring Lake area of North Carolina was first settled by the Cherokee in the late 18th century. The Creek and other indigenous groups also began to settle in this area in the early 19th century, although most of these groups left after a series of wars with the United States. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee occupied Spring Lake during his unsuccessful attempts to cross the NC-TN border into Tennessee. This event is often cited as one of the turning points in the Civil War. After surrendering at Appomattox Court House, General Lee was imprisoned on Hilton Head Island where he died three years later. Because of this event and many others like it, Spring Lake quickly became an important community in northcentral North Carolina. Today, much of what was once called Spring Lake has been developed into larger towns or villages including Hendersonville, Robeson County, Maury County, Tellico Valley and more.
In 1792, the British invaded North Carolina and during the occupation, William Byrd was installed as its first governor. In 1814, North Carolina became a state and in 1838, it became a United States Territory. The area that is now Spring Lake was part of Wake County until 1889 when it was included in Durham County.
