Spring Lake is a small town in Henderson County, North Carolina. It is located on the banks of the Catawba River, about 20 miles northeast of Charlotte and 10 miles southeast of Raleigh. The town was founded in 1892 by J.M. Hinton and continues to be based around agriculture and aviation. The first military unit stationed in Spring Lake was the 3rd Squadron, Airmobile Forces (later redesignated as 3rd Air Cavalry) which arrived in December 1942 from RAF Bentwaters RAF Station near Maidstone, England. That unit operated until June 1945 when it relieved the 2nd Bombardment Wing at Macon Army Airfield, Georgia before being transferred to headquarters USAF at Fort Worth AFB Texas in September 1946 as part ofactivated Third Air Force. The town's airport was acquired by the USAF in February 1951 and became known as SpringLake Airport which served both United States Military forces and commercial airlines until it closed its doors for good in 1984 when jet travel became popular throughout America. Today only a few pieces of evidence remain from this important time in airforce history including an American Airlines hangar still standing next to the runway Despite this lack of physical evidence left behind by these early pioneers, there exists strong circumstantial evidence that SpringLake Airport played an important role during World War II supporting United States military activity including: -Large stockpiles of gasoline storage tanks used by fighter pilots during bombing raids over Europe; these tanks were later converted into aircraft cockpits for use during combat operations; -A Douglas DC-3 airliner which crashed onto runway 25 on 7 May 1944 killing all 5 passengers and one crewmember; this airplane had been leased from American Airlines destined for use as a troop transport during World War II; -An ERJ-20 Dakota bomber which crash landed on runway 9 just north of town on 11 October 1943 after losing power while attacking targets over Germany; this airplane also remained unaccounted for until discovered years later along with other wreckage belonging to three other Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes lost during Operation Overlord

Spring Lake is a census-designated place (CDP) in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Mountain View, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Spring Lake was founded by pioneers in 1852 as a trading post on the Clinch River under the name "Nashville". The Post Office was renamed Spring Lake in 1881 aftersprings near Fort Nashville which had been abandoned during the American Civil War and became an Indian reservation.
The USAF gift history is a long and complex story. It stretches back to World War II, when the United States Air Force was formed as a separate branch of the military. The AF did not exist yet when America entered World War II, so President Franklin D. Roosevelt created it on September 2, 1941. The AF was initially called the American Volunteer Group (AVG). The first plane delivered to the USAF was an F4U Corsair fighter aircraft from Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland on October 25, 1941. On December 5th, 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed executive order 9503 creating theAAF and assigning it to First Air Force at RAF Leconfield in England as part of Allied Forces Europe. This action set into motion a chain of events that would result inthe establishment of NATO and lead to America's involvement in World War II. The first operational air campaign against Nazi Germany began on May 8th 1942 with Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in over 1,000 planes being lost including 100% of RAF Fighter Command’s strength! In 1945 Congress passed legislation providing for an permanent wing within USAF called the Strategic Air Command (SAC). With SAC came responsibility for all strategic bombing activities by both the USAAF and RAF Bomber Command; this ultimately led to America's defeat during World War II. In 1948 General Curtis LeMay became managing director of SAC and continued leading its raids against Japan until his retirement from active duty in 1969. From 1946-1948 there were more than 480 individual commanders who directed USAF operations over enemy territory; these commanders are officially known as "Air Chiefs".

Spring Lake was first settled in the early 1800s by Scotsmen who came to North Carolina looking for new land. The land was rich in coal and silver, so they started a mining company and built a town around the lake. The town grew quickly and soon there were schools, churches, businesses, and more people living here than ever before. The town changed hands many times until it finally came under control of the United States government in 1827. In 1848, the town was renamed Spring Lake after Confederate General John C. Lee because he had donated land to make the community possible. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Spring Lake sided with the Confederacy and lost its status as an American city. However, it continued to function as a military post until 1865 when it fell to Union forces. Since Spring Lake is still an important part of North Carolina history, it has been protected from development by state law since its inception. This makes it one of the most biodiverse places in America and one of the best places to see springtime flowers such as tulips or daffodils.
In 1772, the first white man to set foot in what is now Spring Lake was James Moores. He and his party of settlers arrived after trekking through the area for weeks. The land around Spring Lake was claimed by the Cherokee Nation, but Moores obtained a document from them that allowed him to settle on the property. By 1800, there were over 200 people living in Spring Lake. One of the first businesses established inSpring Lake was a grocery store operated by John Hargrave. In 1892, wooden buildings were built onsite for use as school classrooms and other public facilities. In 1916, when Spring Lake became an incorporated municipality, it had a population of just under 100 residents. Today, Spring Lake has a population of over 350 residents and continues to serve as an important center for local government and community development.
