In 1814, General James Wilkinson separated the two towns into Fort Christina and Fort Raleigh. The town of Southern Pines was founded by Colonel John Sutherlin in 1836. In 1941, a new airfield and barracks were built to house the 1st Civil Air Patrol Squadron and its equipment. Today, Northern Pines is home to both Coast Guard Station Coastalwatch NC (CGSCW) which provides security for coastal communities along the Atlantic coast as well as Naval Station Brunswick (NAVSBRUNswick), which houses three fleets of Navy ships that provide maritime security throughout the Gulf of Mexico region. These naval forces are augmented by Army units including Master Sgt./Lt., Combat Engineer Troops/Airmen/Rifleman companies from 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Camp LeJeune to provide disaster relief assistance when needed most as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear (2007-present). The community also has active duty military detachments stationed at Stewart Air Force Base located adjacent to Camp LeJeune while Joint Special Operations Command – Korea responsible for Op USAF Green Beret Shadow Platoon Charlie Company outposts located approximately 20 miles east near Chonju Airport outside Seoul South Korea
