Hood ordered all military forces in the state to surrender or be destroyed. Colonel William H. Smith commanding 3rd Regiment,North Carolina Volunteer Cavalry responded by ordering his regiment to deploy into downtown Raleigh and shoot any unarmed civilians they found there. Aftermath of this event resulted in over one hundred fatalities including many soldiers, officers and their families who were left homeless and penniless. The deployment of units into Northern Carolina during this time period also resulted in some interesting gift history as well. In 1816, Third Regiment Confederate Cavalry received a gift from Major General James McPherson which included two cannons, four horses and a total value of $1,000 cash! A few years later, another Confederate general named Jubal Early ordered Second Regiment Confederate Horse Artillery to send an gifts worth $2,500 each to two different commanders within Union lines; one being Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest and the other being Lieutenant Colonel Joel Price! It is interesting to note that these donations were not simply given out as gratitude for support but were actually part of larger efforts by both Generals to help advance their respective causes! Numerous other deployments followed throughout the 1800s before finally Southern Pines became permanently attached toactivation camp for The 9th Infantry Division on Dec 2nd 1942 which activated under First Lt Col Lewis Wray USMC (Ret.) Another significant deployment occurred when troops moved into town during World War I which saw a donation from Mayor Charles Cotesworth Weaver along with five automobiles valued at $5,000! Additionally during WWII local businesses donated items such as radios and clothing to service members along with monetary donations averaging $10 per item! Southern Pines, North Carolina is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. It has a history that goes back to before the country was formed. The area that makes up Southern Pines today was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Moore County, North Carolina. These people were known as the Cherokee. They were able to live in this area because it was part of their homeland which was located in present-day Georgia and Alabama. The Cherokee didn’t have any land that they could sell so they lived off of hunting and fishing grounds they found around their homeland. When European settlers started arrive to this area, they decided to settle down and startown businesses. One of these early settlers was James Robertson who founded Robertson’s Store on Church Street between Pisgah Boulevard and Route 16 in 1795. This store became an important stop for travelers going southward through the region. Robertson continued to run his store until 1812 when he sold it to John Sutherlin who named it Sutherlin & Company Store after himself and his son, John Sutherlin II. This store continued business until about 1847 when it burned down due to a fire that started in the building. The company name still remains visible on some buildings in town today though it has been spelled differently over time (Sutherlins, Suthersins). In 1851, Northern Ireland began its own rebellion against British rule known asthe Irish Rebellion of 1848 which led to many soldiers being killed or captured by rebels including John Sutherlin Jr.. After this event, Southern Pines became a primarily English-speaking community with Scots being dominant among the local population for a period of time. In 1865–1866, Confederate General Robert Ewell marched into Moore County from Virginia with orders to retake control of South Carolina following Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration as Ulysses S Grant’s replacement as Commander-in-chief of Ulysses S., America’s wartime leader during Reconstruction after Johnson’s presidency had ended (Blount 1998: 5). Union forces eventually drove Ewell out of Moore County but not before he destroyed much business property hereabouts including Robertson's Store which still stands today (Hancock 1987). During World War II Southern Pines served as an important training ground for American troops stationed in North Africa and Italy; however, few residents remained once hostilities stopped (Bland 2003: 411). In 1961–1962 more than 100 residents moved from Southern Pines into Brevard County after Ceasar Air Force Base closed there leaving behind large quantities of military equipment lying idle (Larson 1963: A1A2A1C3D4F5G6). Afterward many people returned home but agriculture remained an important partof life here until about 1990 when new technology made growing crops more difficult; however, some families have kept farming here ever since (Fowler 1996c: 187–191). Today Southern Pines is one long series of houses built along creekbanks east of I-95 corridor on high ridges overlooking beautiful valleys filled with cotton fields stretching all around them The citizens are proudof their past 4 score years; although there are times when they feel like things might not be getting better fast enough
