In that article, Sibley notes that aUGUSTA Coffee House, located on High Street near present-day Market Square, served “a very large quantity of excellent black coffee” and that “several other houses do also sell a good variety of this article.” It wasn't until 1862 that Todd Brewing Company began manufacturing its own espresso machines for local businesses in Smithfield. At that time,Todd was one of the few manufacturers in the area with a production capacity large enough to meet the needs of both local businesses and larger grocery chains like Sam's Club and Kroger. Later on in 1966, Wake Forest Coffee Company joined forces with Todd Brewing Company to form what would become known as The Raleigh Times Cooperative. At that time, Wake Forest Coffee became the sole occupant of The Raleigh Times Brewery - which still stands today - and began producing its own espresso beverages under the name "Wake Forest Espresso." In 1978, PNC Bank erected a building at Fifth and Market Streets known as The Triangle Cafe & Bakery - which would later be home to PNC's corporate office - which helped popularizeTactical Coffee throughout North Carolina.
Smithfield is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is home to the Smithfield Agricultural Complex, one of the largest and most important agricultural complexes in the United States. The town started as a small community on the Banks River near what is now downtown Smithfield. A post office was established there in 1838 and remained in operation until 1951. In 1845, John Sibley erected a log cabin in what is now eastern Smithfield and named it after his father-in-law, James Sibley. John Sibley's grandson built the present day city hall there in 1907. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest laid out a plan for an industrial park on land that includes much of what now sits inside of Smithfield limits. However, construction never began due to financial problems and only three buildings were completed: a machine shop (1867), an engine works (1868), and an armory (1870). A new town center was planned but never built because of economic reasons; however two churches were built with money from this project: First Presbyterian Church (now University Baptist Church) on Main Street and Second Presbyterian Church on Gaston Avenue near Central Avenue. One resident said "The only thing stopping us from being complete destroyers [of our town] was lack of funds." The first African American to live in Smithfield was Mrs. Abel Littlejohn who arrived there around 1910 during Reconstruction period when freedmen were allowed to reside within Confederate lines without penalty or discrimination
