Smithfield Coffee was founded in 1860 by Charles Smith and his brother-in-law, John A. Randall. The first coffee beans were grown on Randall's farm about three miles north of town. In 1876, Charles Smith sold the farm to J.W. Broyles and moved the beans to a new location near what is now downtown Smithfield. By 1896, the company had outgrown its original building and built a larger one on Market Street in downtown Smithfield. The original building still stands and is used as the company office today.

Smithfield is a small town located in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. It is the second-oldest continuously inhabited community in Forsyth County after Greenville. In 1792, one of the first white families to arrive in what is now Smithfield were two brothers, David and Solomon Jones. The Joneses farmed three miles north of where their farm now stands on present day Ulysses Road. For many years, Smithfield was known as "The Hill". In 1836, Samuel Latham began operations as a blacksmith and foundry in what is now the village of Smithfield. By 1840, he had also built a grist mill which became the first flour mill in eastern North Carolina. During the Civil War (1861- 1865), Smithfield was part of Union forces and hosted a military hospital for Confederate soldiers from Forsyth County. After the war ended, most residents returned to their everyday lives until 1922 when they voted to become an independent city under Mayor John Hargrave. The City of Smithfield has grown rapidly over the past few decades with manufacturing companies relocating to its outskirts and new housing developments popping up all around town – making it one of Chapel Hill's most vibrant communities!

Smithfield is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Gaston County and home to the Smithfield Foods Incorporated company. The city was founded in 1837 by Colonel Andrew Johnson as a small cotton plantation named "Johnson's Mill". In 1865, General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate army were moving north from Yorktown toward Raleigh when they passed through Gastonia on their way to cross the Tennessee River into South Carolina. As they travelled, they stopped at Johnson's Mill for lunch on October 12th 1865. General Lee ordered his cavalry troopers to burn down Johnson's mill and all of its buildings in order to destruction any evidence that he ever stayed or fought in Gastonia. The town of Smithfield was founded about one mile east of Johnson's Mill by John Witherspoon on November 15th 1837. Witherspoon acquired land from Nicholas Garner for $1 per acre which he then platted into townships and named them after himself (e.g., Chatham Township, Hampton Township etc.). By 1840 there were over 100 citizens living in Smithfield with just 10 acres (4 hectares) available for agriculture. In 1881, an addition of 30 acres (12 hectares) made it possible for farmers to grow tobacco instead of cotton so growth continued until 1915 when plantings were discontinued due to worries about pests and diseases that had invaded adjoining states during World War I. After years of decline overall production ceased in 1966 with only 2 plants left operational; however local entrepreneurs resurrected efforts beginning around 1990-1991 producing some 25 metric tons/year before ceasing operations again due to relocations within North Carolina during the 2000s recession combined with economic uncertainty following Hurricane Katrina damage). Today Smithfield is a thriving center for commerce with more than 50 businesses including several large grocery stores as well as many small businesses catering to a wide variety of customers including manufacturing, healthcare, education and retail outlets such as gasoline stations and convenience stores carrying a variety of agricultural items such as cornmeal, flour mills products etc.. Restaurants include several high end steak houses anchored by two excellent wing restaurants offering views over downtown while popular places like BBQ joints provide casual dining experiences typical across much rural America . Smithfield was founded in 1784 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Hannah. The first post office at Smithfield was established in 1785. In 1814, the town was renamed to Charlotte after Queen Charlotte of England. On October 15, 1886, the city of Charlotte incorporated as a municipal corporation and on April 12, 1907, Smithfield became an independent city again.
