Smithfield is an agricultural and processing town in Wake County, North Carolina. The population was 21,059 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wake County. Smithfield is located on the Yadkin River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Raleigh and 50 miles (80 km) east of Charlotte. The area that would become Smithfield was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1800, however, most of what is now Smithfield had been developed as a slaveholding plantation by Sir Walter Raleigh and his family. After Raleigh's death in 1813, most of his land passed to his son and heir George Washington Cary Jr., who sold much of it off for cotton plantations throughout South Carolina and Georgia. In 1838-39, John Cundall purchased some 1,500 acres (560 ha) around what is now the town center from Cary for $4 per acre ($26 per hectare). This gave rise to the name "Cundall's Corner." In 1845, a group of businessmen from nearby Greensboro formed a company to purchase allAvailable land within five miles (8 km) of their city limits for £10 per acre ($16 per ha). They called themselves "The Cotton Producers' Association." The company built mills that processed cotton until 1865 when Reconstruction ended following American Civil War. The mills were demolished in the 1920s but their remains can still be seen along with other early industrial sites like Swift’s Leather Works and Pemberton & Sons grocery store on Chapel Hill Road just outside town limits today. From 1865-1920 there were over 100 small farmers operating hereabouts growing wheat, cornmeal, hayseed and other crops; many still do so today though larger farms have taken over since then In addition to its role as an agricultural center during this time period it also became known as a center for manufacturing; notably textiles such as sawmills and dyeing plants; brewing; brickmaking; cigar making; soap making etc.; along with numerous stores including several J&R stores before they closed down during prohibition Smithfield lost its manufacturing heyday after 1919 when Winston Churchill became Prime Minister but has slowly regained some activity recently in fields such as meatpacking
