Smithfield is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Smithfield is located on the Yadkin River, east of Greensboro and west of Winston-Salem. The first people to live in what is now Smithfield were the Lenape Indians who lived along the riverbank. In 1735, English colonists arrived and began trading with the Lenape and other Native Americans. By 1800, Smithfield had a smallpox pandemic that killed many people in the area. In 1819, General Johnston's army invaded North Carolina from Tennessee and marched through Cherokee County looking for General Thomas Pickens who had surrendered at Appomattox Court House four years earlier. When Johnston reached Smithfield he found that most of the white families living in the village had fled to nearby counties before he could march into their homes without them. Johnston ordered his men not to fire on any Indian houses or citizens until they got permission from General Pickens who was then living near Elizabethtown northeast of town on Pisgah Creek (now known as Lumberton). After getting permission from Pickens, Johnston set up his tents outside town limits where he ordered his men to cook their pork over an open fire while he discussed strategy with his commanders north of town. The next day when Johnston's command moved out to attack some Indians southeast of town they discovered a large force under Colonel Giles Gilbert waiting for them across Pisgah Creek just south of present day Union Mills Road/Route 601 which ran parallel to present day Patterson Road/Route 601A (which today forms eastern border between Asheboro and Pittsboro). Confederate troops stopped short when they saw three large British cannons mounted on wagons parked near Gilbert's encampment while hundreds more soldiers guarded him and his artillerymen inside park boundaries beyond Gilliland’s Ferry Rd./Route 915A (now known as Chapel Hill Highway) about northwest of present day I-95 exit 506 off US 26). With only nine guns against thirty cavalrymen plus artillerymen under Colonel Gilbert there was no way for Johnston's forces to victorious engage this numerically superior foe despite heavy losses including Captains John Pemberton (in commandoe), Alexander Stephens and Archibald Forbes among others; these casualties included several officers dead or wounded including LtCol George Washington Custis commanding Brigade Credentials detachment led by BrigadierGeneral James Hethcote; all told about fifty percent or more total Confederate casualties during two days engagement despite bloody hand-to-hand combat with few opportunities for retreat even if general orders had been followed (Giles Gilbert Diary entry dated July 25th 1819)). This battle helped solidify English control over Cherokee County after Federal troops retreated back across Roanoke River effective September 2nd 1819 effectively ending Indian resistance in this territory permanently(Custis Journal Entrydated September 2nd 1819)). Aftermath: Massacre at White Settlement & surrounding areas - Over 200 natives massacred +/- 30 whites killed +/- 20 slaves taken hostage +/- 10 cannon captured resulting in huge indemnity payment + $100 million payout given by UK government

Smithfield is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. It is the original seat of government for the county. The population was 10,857 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Smithfield was James McMillan, who arrived in 1786. The area that would become Smithfield was surveyed by Colonel John Sevier and named for him, Smithfield Plantation. A store and tavern were built here around 1800 by Captain John Tryon and his wife Sally. Tryon donated land to the town for a courthouse and school district in 1827. In 1835, when Johnston County was created from parts of Robeson and Bladen counties, Smithfield became part of Johnston County. Smithfield experienced some growth during the 1830s due to its strategic location on Wilmington Road midway between Raleigh and Charlotte (then called "The Queen's Highway"). By 1840, more than 1,000 people lived in the town; it had an arsenal, a jail, a post office, three churches—one Protestant Episcopal (the first church in North Carolina), two Baptist Churches (the first churches in North Carolina), two schools (a primary school and one academy), four stores—including one with a storeroom larger than any other in America at that time—and three hotels catering to travelers passing through or working near Raleigh or Charlotte on their way southward to New Orleans or Baltimore or eastward to Florida or Texas. In 1846-1847 local farmers petitioned Congress for permission to establish market gardens within their own limits so as not to depend too much on shipments coming down the road from Raleigh via Wilmington Road. After several months of review this request was denied because there appeared “to be no practical objection” from either side but rather because “market gardening could only amount to agriculture unprofitable without freightage” which constituted about 68% of all U.S exports at that time! So although some farmers did start market gardens early enough just before this prohibition went into effect they are generally considered as having started after it went into effect because most likely they were able to get goods like fruits etc., over railroads then available only intermittently
Smithfield is a city in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 20,717 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Davidson County after Charlotte. The first settlement in what is now Smithfield was made by Scots-Irish colonists who arrived there in the early 17th century. The town formed when a group of these colonists (the "Fayetteville Company") moved from Fayetteville, North Carolina to establish a new landowning society called Johnston's Creek Township on March 30, 1796. The town name honors General James Johnston who fought with distinction during the American Revolutionary War and also served as Governor of South Carolina from 1798 to 1800. In 1825, John Ladd founded an agricultural company that became known as Ladd & Co., which grew into one of America's leading cotton seed companies. In 1865, the company merged with Vanderbilt Cottonseed Company to become JLL&Co., which remains active today as one of the world's largest cotton seed companies. In 1881, George Witherspoon bought some land east of downtown Smithfield and began developing it into what is now Witherspoon Park. This development later became known as Live Oak Rowland because many of its trees were planted around that time near Live Oak Cemetery and Ballpark Drive close to Interstate 85/ York Road
